AC/DC – Download Festival – 2010 (Gig)

AC/DC play Donington for the first time in 19 years

The greatest rock band in the world put on a show we’ll never forget

AC/DC play Donington for the first time in 19 years

Bringing their very own stage and set to the Donington turf, AC/DC played a show that many had been waiting for not just for months, but years.

With the audience stood transfixed with excitement there’s more than a small hint of expectation in the air as over 90,000 people wait to hear the greatest rock band in the world do what they do best.

Out of no where, the sound stops, the lights go down and a video starts playing on the screens of a speeding train. It’s laden with CGI images of AC/DC and provocative girls. It is very cool.

Then before our very eyes the band emerges on stage. The noise from the crowd is almost unbearable.

Angus is dressed in a dark green velvet school uniform (what else?). Brian dons his trademark blue cap, ripped shirt and a cheeky grin. Malcom, Cliff and Phil look on top of their game as ever. AC/DC have arrived at Donington for the first time in 19 years and explode in to Rock N Roll Train.

“It’s good being back!” cried Brian. “The party starts right now.”

As Angus hops his way up and down the catwalk, AC/DC fire out hit after hit. Back In Black is instantly followed by Big Jack. When they play Dirty Deeds there isn’t a single soul in the 90,000-strong audience who isn’t clapping their hands, singing along or pumping their fists in the air.

“I can smell the rock ‘n roll out there, keep it coming” says Brian. “You’re making us proud up here!”

As the band break in to Shot Down In Flames, the sun refuses to set, clearly enjoying itself as much as everyone else here tonight.

Angus is like a man possessed, suddenly losing control and sprinting across the stage, throwing himself around just like he did here back in ’81. His fingers glide faultlessly on the fingerboard of his Gibson and the crowd are hooked.

The sound system at Download is incredible, easily reaching out to fans at the very back of the Arena. You can feel the ground shaking for miles around.

In between songs, Brian’s banter is minimal. He doesn’t need to be clever with words when the songs are this good. He just keeps telling the crowd to keep on rocking, and they do exactly that.

“The next song is about a dirty, dirty girl,” he confesses. “She’s so dirty, she made Big Jack cry.” The band burst into Big Jack, and the cameras focus on the girls in the crowd.

“Get ‘em out if you got ‘em, girls” says Brian. Some of the girls do, but clearly not enough for Angus’ liking. He ditches his guitar runs to the back of the stage and starts to strip, revealing a fetching pair of AC/DC boxers! We want a pair. If they’re used, that’s fine.

Next up in the vaudevillian spectacle of the AC/DC set, a giant bell descends on the stage. Brian leaps on to in and Hells Bells rings out across the Arena.

War Machine is a delight for the eyes, complete with a CGI video of tanks, ships, planes, and of course, girls. The lighting is dazzling. The band are absolutely on fire.

The show goes on, and before you know it Angus is stood at the end of the catwalk doing his thing on a raised platform, surrounded by bright lights and confetti. It is mind blowing.

Then a huge inflatable Rosie is blown up, and she’s riding the massive train that sits ubiquitously in the centre of the stage! Whole Lotta Rosie kicks in, one of the highlights of the night.

The show builds to a climatic finale, and following a devastating guitar solo and an earth-shattering rendition of Let There Be Rock, the band wave to the crowd and leave the stage.

There’s no way that the Donington hoard are going to let them go just yet though, and after a few minutes of chanting, AC/DC back for an encore in the form of Highway To Hell and the climatic For Those About To Rock.

The night was rounded off with canons, pyros and an explosive fireworks display, bringing the set to an unforgettable end.

It’s very difficult to sum up in words what happened tonight when AC/DC played the Donington turf – it was one of those nights we’ll remember for a long ol’ time. History was made this evening. And we were there. Were you?
