Primate – Draw Back A Stump

You can be sure that when a new band pops up with members boasting positions in bands such as Brutal Truth and Mastodon, the outcome will be nothing short of raw, emphatic rage …and that is sure as hell the case on Primate’s début album ‘Draw Back A Stump’.

Bringing together both southern tinged gritty punk and seismic stoner shreds, the bloody tremors of Hellbound to the sludge riffage of Silence of Violence and March of the Curmudgeon that prizes fast paced grind brutality. Primate, are indeed sounding very much the finished article.

‘Drinking and Drivinghighlights the bands southern guitar influences along with their aggressive raw-edged punk riffage which works to the bands strength and further defines their brutal sound.

The short but raging ‘Get The Fuck Off My Lawn‘, is much life the majority of this record in the fact that it is less likely to stay in one’s mind for very long as a renowned piece of music, as it is to stir up pits at a live show. However don’t get us wrong. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all.

Is ‘Draw Back A Stump’ a metal record that is going to change the face of the genre? Honestly, no.  Nonetheless Primate have given it a bloody good go and set a definitive benchmark in modern metal.
