Astonishing, amazing and incredible, these are the first words that came to mind when I started listening to ‘One step beyond’ the first full length release from the French band: ‘Step in Fluid’.
To be truthful I am not sure you can count this as a metal album, especially when you look at the definition of “metal music”: (loud and harsh sounding rock music with a strong beat; lyrics usually involve violent or fantasy imagery) One Step Beyond is none of these things, for a start there are no vocals, Step in Fluid have created an album based on the strength of their talents, allowing the instruments to do the singing and giving birth to a whole new genre: Jazzcore!
Step in Fluid have combined an assortment of elements to create One step beyond, you have the Jazz, which is executed flawlessly on the drums, the Funk that is reminiscent of the 70’s era, an African element which only enriches the sound which has been born, a cheeky trumpet that emphasizes the Jazz aspects and of course the metal is there but more as under current rather than in your face. One step beyond must be listened to from start to finish otherwise it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Every track is different with subtle changes in tempo’s and styles, yet somehow they have cleverly carried the last riff into the next track without recycling the same riffs over and over again creating a very fluid laidback album.
Like ninety percent of the bands from “Viral propaganda” Step in Fluid are thinking outside the box when it comes to constructing music, the essentials are there but Step in Fluid have thrown them into a blender added some ice and a slice and created a cocktail that is funk filled, soaked in smooth riffs, is harmonious and disjointed, it’s just a little bit sexual!
If you do anything in 2012 please give yourself a break from the norm and go and check these guys out, trust me you will not regret it!!
