Well 2012 has been a real treat not only for Winterfylleth fans, but Black metal fans overall: we have seen the re-released of Winterfylleth debut The Ghost of Heritage, and then like it was Christmas of something we now have their highly anticipated third release “The Threnody of Triumph”. So often I hear and read about bands that call themselves atmospheric Black Metal but personally I find very few actually get it right, however I can say with great pleasure that Winterfylleth hit the nail right on the head. They have without a doubt mastered the ability to change a track from all out chaotic and then delve head first into a wonderous atmospheric tone.
The Threnody of Triumph is powerful yet melodic, ranging from tracks that feature furious blasting, strong riffs and gravelesque vocals interwinded with delicateness that creates yet another element that secures Winterfylleth at the front of not just British Black Metal but atmosherphic Black Metal.
For me personally I adore the tracks Home Is Behind, The Swart Raven and A memorial. Home Behind is a beautiful acoustic track that inspires your imagination to run wild whereas The Swart Raven captures the raw Black metal sound flawlessly as does A Memorial, they are a little rough around the edges, with the dirty almost broken amp sound these just happen to be the main aspects that drew me into Black Metal, its about Muscians and their music rather than the over polished “how many copies can we sell?” that is becoming all too common currently.
The Threnody of Triumph has everything I want and hopefully everything the Black Metal fan would want too. I also see The Threnody of Triumph being enjoyed by fans of other genres within Metal, Why?, Because Winterfylleth are insanely talented and have now created three albums each of which progress tremondously craving out their position in the world of Black Metal. I cannot fault this album in the slightest and I will certainly be looking forward to a future tour.
