ALL TIED UP – INTERVIEW

All Tied Up are making friends and picking up new fans. The Brit pop-punkers release their new EP  ‘Breaking Silence’, via Stack-in-a-box Records on Friday 22nd September. Before then, we had a sit-down with the guys…..

What is the full band line-up, who plays what?

All Tied Up are a 4 piece band with Dave Palfreyman (Vocals/ Guitar), Billy Norman (Lead/Rhythm guitars) Nick Freeman (Drums/Percussion) & Leebo (Bass guitar).

How and when did the band form?

We’ve been a full 4 piece band now since around late 2012 and based in Milton Keynes. Dave writes a lot of his songs in an acoustic format and was initially recording a solo demo with Nick earlier on in the year. Nick and Dave go back a good few years and midway through the recording process decided that the songs would sound bigger and brighter with a full band behind it. After experimenting with another bassist who didn’t quite work out, they contacted Leebo who they knew had just finished with his band around the same time. They had known him a good few years and began rehearsing at a local studio. Realising that there was still something missing sonically we got in touch with Nick’s best friend and long time collaborator Billy to become a second guitarist and All Tied Up was officially born!

Milton Keynes is a new city as many will understand, but despite being a giant lump of concrete in the middle of Buckinghamshire it’s kinda famous for concrete cows, roundabouts and ‘stealing’ a football team! – it has a very ‘metal’ music scene which has seen the rise of bands such as Hacktivist & Heart of a Coward.. interesting fact.. Nick was actually the drummer of Hacktivist in their very early days!

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

I guess we started taking things really seriously after about 18 months or so, so right into the recording stage of our ‘Impossible To Breathe’ E.P. We had started to see a fairly decent rise in crowd attendances locally and started to get a little following and buzz on social media. We had shifted 100 copies of our demo album/cd ‘Back 2 Basics’ within a couple of months of release and figured that if people seemed to enjoy what we were doing that we really needed to push ourselves out there to a wider audience!

What are your musical influences?

Where to begin! – literally as cliché as this sounds and as every band will always reply, we are such different musicians and people that our individual tastes are wildly different! A couple of us are into really heavy bands, but I guess musically and stylistically we draw a lot of influence from bands in the pop punk scene (old and new) – We all love bands like All Time Low, A Day to Remember, Jimmy Eat World, Blink and Simple Plan because they aren’t your ‘generic’ pop punk – they are really clever with the way the write and construct their songs which is something we try to do ourselves, we like to try and think outside of the box. The new wave of pop punk which is currently happening seems to have bred a lot of ‘clone’ style bands where it’s hard to figure out exactly who you are listening to – Green Day (another band we are influenced by, being founders of the original pop punk movement) for example seem to evolve record by record which is absolutely something we aspire to do, it keeps things fresh and interesting!

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? are you friends from school or any family relations?

Dave, Billy and Nick all went to  secondary school with each other (although in different year groups) and knew Leebo by association with Billy’s sister who is a couple of years older – we’ve known each other for between 13-20 years so the bond goes pretty far back. Some of us had been in bands with each other in some capacity at one point in in time so there’s a music bond as well as a friendship bond. Having known each other that long, we are almost like a family, a dysfunctional family.. but a family none the less!

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We think the proof is in the music we are making itself – although we fall into the ‘pop punk’ genre – we aren’t trying to be as ‘American’ sounding with production and vocally as a lot of U.K pop punk bands seem to. We are proud to be a bunch of British lads and as much as we enjoy listening to our American counterparts, we don’t want to ‘blend in’ and have people NOT knowing they’re listening to All Tied Up – we strive to be one of those instantly recognisable sounds.. you’d KNOW a foo fighters song by Dave Grohl’s voice, you’d KNOW a green day song from Billy-Joe’s guitar sound.. Our Dave (Palfreyman) is a northern lad through and through which he reflects vocally as well as personality wise, so there’s no sickly sweet ‘americana’ about him or us – I guess being slightly older than some of the other upcoming UK bands in our scene our look tends to lean towards a more grown up style these days too.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

A British twist on a predominantly Americanised genre. Pop Rock with passion.

Do you have a tour on the horizon?

We have a few shows booked in around the release date of the e.p which comes out on 22nd Sept 2017, so the focus is absolutely to adding as many dates to support is as possible – we are currently not with a booking agent or management which we would LOVE to be so show booking is slightly more challenging especially alongside writing fresh material and keeping up a social media presence.
