Animator – M2TM Ireland Finalist 2015 – Interview

The New Ross Thrash machine that is Animator has made quite an impression on their stomp towards this year’s Metal 2 The Masses Ireland Final and they haven’t shown any signs of taking the foot off the pedal just yet.  We caught up with the lads ahead of the last stage of the journey to Bloodstock 2015.

Congratulations on reaching the Final of Metal 2 The Masses. Personally, I feel that everyone in the final is a winner but if you were to be chosen to represent Ireland at Bloodstock, what would it mean to Animator.

Ryan: It would mean everything to the band, everything we’ve been working for the past 8 yrs or so has been to play gigs like this.

How has the overall M2TM experience been this year for your band?

Barry: The experience has been great. We took it as an opportunity to sit back and evaluate things we were doing well and things we weren’t. We asked ourselves “if we were judges, what would we look for”. We then went about practicing like fuck on our weak points. So it’s been great for our overall live performance.

What would you say to bands thinking about applying for next year’s competition?

Ryan: I would say give it your best shot, don’t hold back. Go up there as if you were playing at Bloodstock every time you play!

Barry: Go see some previous winners live and see the standard. This competition is great exposure and great to meet other bands and having high quality music with a high quality performance will definitely get you some attention even if you don’t eventually win.

Has there been a memorable moment that stands out in your mind at the shows to date?

Barry: There hasn’t been a single most memorable moment but meeting the other bands and reconnecting with old friends has been great. Even though this is a competition with only one winner everyone is really supportive of each other which is great to see. Seeing the quality of the other bands has also been great.

In 5 words, describe what we can expect from you at the final.

Ryan: Energy, Determination, Sweat, Thrash and most of all Passion.

If you could pick one song from your arsenal to let the uninitiated hear what your band is all about, what would it be?

Ryan: Ultra ’53 shows off our more thrashy elements with some crazy twists and turns. Lyrically it tells the story of unethical government-backed research on an individual which results in his descending into madness. This theme is mirrored in the music which seems match the brutal impact of the experiments on the psyche of our protagonist.

Barry: In God we Trust appears to be a real fan favourite. It’s very different to a lot of our other material with the lower-tempo, more simplistic song writing, and it shows off our more groove orientated side. The lyrics are about greed and how it consumes some people’s lives, especially in Ireland in recent years.
