As I Lay Dying are one of the finest metalcore bands around, and to celebrate their momentous ten year reign, the lads in As I Lay Dying have decided to present to their gracious fans a compilation made up a collection of: Brilliant covers of the likes of Judas Priest and Slayer, re-recorded and remixed songs from every As I Lay Dying album, and never more heard material which quite frankly are some of the best material I have heard from this amazing Californian five piece. This is the ultimate in all gifts for a fan and yes it will cost you to have this musical gem, but it’s a pleasure to know that As I Lay Dying appreciate the loyal support of their rabid fans.
On Decas we have four great cover songs that could be said are some of the best covers ever recorded. First we have ‘War Ensemble’ by Slayer which sounds even more aggressive than the original when vocalist Tim Lambesis roars in like a ferocious lion. Then we hav
e the two Judas Priest hits ‘Hellion’ and ‘Electric Eye’ which fit together like clockwork showing the talent of lead guitarist Nick Hipa as he bends, wails and soars in these classic metal hits. Finally a song called Coffee Mug which is all a bit of fun really as it’s an extremely fast, extremely heavy cover of the Descendants laugh out loud song.
As for the remixes, we have everything from medleys to dubstep. It’s great to hear metal songs recorded in a completely different and unique way and when you have the raving goodness of tracks like ‘The Blinding of False’, ‘Confined’ and ‘Elegy’ blasting through your sound system, you can’t help but have the time of your life and throw down like a mad man to them.
The three new tracks on Decas ‘Paralyzed’, ‘From Shapeless to Breakable’ and ‘Moving Forward’ are great metalcore tunes, combining solid guitar riffs, aggressive beat-downs, melodic vocal chorus’s and harsh fast paced verses to form some of As I Lay Dying’s best material that will hopefully be on As I Lay Dying’s next full album. If this is just a taste of what is to come from metalcore’s crowned heroes, I can’t wait to what else they have in store on their next album. One thing is for sure it will be full of fast paced, exhilarating, fiery classics.
Decas is a blessing from the gods, and if you don’t buy a copy of this you are an idiot who doesn’t deserve to call himself a metal head doesn’t deserve life in fact. It’s fast, it’s heavy, it’s As I Lay Dying. What else could you possibly want? [8/10]
