Black Cat Bones – interview

Brit rock n rollers BLACK CAT BONES reboot their new EP ‘Down To The River’ on Friday 29th September. We ask the band to introduce themselves:

What is the full band line-up, who plays what?

Jonnie Hodson – Lead Vocals, Harmonica; Rimmer – Lead Guitar; Ash Janes – Drums, back up vocals; Adam Kerbache – Rhythm guitar, back up vocals; Jamie Hayward – Bass, back up vocals.

How and when did the band form?

The band formed from myself (Jonnie) and Rimmer jamming, I advertised on a join my band type website for a “Slash, Joe Perry, Jimmy Page, Paul Kossoff type guitar player .  I think Rim had put an advert up around the same time looking for a singer, to fit a “Aerosmith, Velvet Revolver, UFO, Whitesnake” type set up. I answered and we got together for a jam, Rimmer asked me to join the band he was with, I wasn’t overly impressed with them, but for me he looked and played like a rock star. I convinced him to leave and we’d form our own band, I knew Ash from jamming around and the rest is pretty much history! Something interesting about Liverpool, off the top of my head, we had the first commercial wet dock anywhere on earth!

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

When we got our first rhythm player Lew, I think that’s when we started really getting down and writing, but we have had a couple of line-up changes, when we went in to the studio to record the River record is when this line up started really cooking with gas. I don’t think a band ever stops developing like that though, it’s a continual thing.

What are your musical influences?

As a band everything from Muddy Water to Motley, I personally am a huge lover and student of the blues, Muddy, Wolf, Elmore James, BB King, all those guys. Although Paul Rodgers is my favourite singer, I’m lucky enough to have told him a few times too! Everyone has separate and often very different influences, but the common ground I think I Guns, Aerosmith and maybe a couple others that we all agree on. To me it’s what makes it interesting!

Where have you played or toured?

We’ve played the UK, we haven’t managed to get to Europe yet. Only England and Scotland. We’ve toured with Marco Mendoza and played with, Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown, The Quireboys, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Warrior Soul and The Answer. I’ve got my sights on supporting a few bands!

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Honey and gravel. It’s about feel, the music, the lyrics mean a lot to me, so it’s about a feeling, not always a sound. My father knew a deaf couple, he told me they’d go to heavy metal and hard rock gigs because the vibrations translated the music for them, almost like an audio version of braille.
