Blue Origin/Somnium CD Review.

There’s nothing like a good rock album to lift the spirits after suffering with the post-Christmas blues, and this is not a good album, this is a great album.
So before the Christmas credit card bill arrives, do yourself a favor and buy this record. Simple as.
This is a band for fans of proper rock music, this is just what we need to kick the self-suffering indie bands and pretend American rock bands into touch.
The album is fan funded via the Pledge Music Project, and that is no mean feat for a debut album, however the band have been going for seven years and have built up an impressive fan base, so it shouldn’t really have come as a big surprise when their fans piled in to make this happen.
‘Somnium’ contains all the ingredients to make this a commercial as well as a fan success, heavy, modern and metal infused rock with some killer solos, the band take their cues from the likes of Motley Crue, skid Row and Alter Bridge. There are hints of Dream Theater and even The Almighty in this potent mix.
Somnium opens with ‘Sick’, it’s a song you can’t help headbanging along to, as it instantly grabs you with its punchy beat and catchy riffs.
‘Take Your Pills’ is up next, another great catchy number which will have a video released in early 2013.
‘Make Me’, is a heartfelt love song, slowing down the pace, this love song certainly nails it, but it is Mike’s impressive guitar solo that makes this song shine.
As great Mike is at playing guitar, Nick’s wide range of vocal ability is amazing to hear, he adds so much depth, power and passion to the songs it makes your toes curl.
The rest of the tracks on this album are equally as impressive with ‘Blur The Lines’ and ‘Godless’ being the stand out tracks for me, however I can’t really fault any of them, each track deserves its place on this release.
An impressive 9/10
