Singer, scoundrel and all around crazy son of a bitch – Chris Bowes of the mighty Alestorm is back with his very own solo album coming off the back of Alestorm’s killer 2011 release Back through Time. First of all, if you were expecting a cheesy heavy metal masterpiece, singing about pirates sinking Viking ships, and drunken wenches with big jugs…. I mean eyes, then you have expected wrong. Chris Bowes has taken the cheesy out of the metal, and placed it all onto the organ, ranting over in his best singing voice about Doctor Who’s hand, A Policeman, and how he enjoys going to the beef market with his grandma. If you don’t wet your pants listening to this album, then you need to go get your sense of humour checked out!

Production wise it isn’t a great album, as Chris Bowes has recorded it on his home computer, but the dodgy sound makes the songs all the more hysterical as Chris Bowes plays the plinky plonky electric organ parts (which he isn’t bad at) in songs like ‘The Weather is Nice’, ‘Going Fast in a Car’ and ‘The Day the Toaster Caught on Fire’. It’s basically Alestorm without the pirate theme and the extremely catchy songs, just leaving the fun jokey element in.

Chris Bowes has such a powerful voice when singing live with Alestorm. But, under the influence of Alcohol (red wine as seen in the David Tennant’s Hands music video) he sounds like well…. a drunk guy, babbling on about nonsense. It’s more of a comedy act than an actual album, but after listening to the songs ‘David Tennant’s Hands’, ‘A Pleasant Walk’ and ‘There is a Policeman’ Chris Bowes will have you widdling in your pants, and singing along like a deranged fool along with the king of musical comedy.

The best thing about this album is that it is absolutely free to download from Chris Bowes’s website or can be bought in CD version from Terrorsquid Records. If Tenacious D can’t make you laugh, if the joke in Steel Panther has ran to thin and if Spinal Tap should save their jokes for funerals, then you definitely need to at least download yourself a copy of At the Organ with Chris Bowes and appreciate that just because you are in a metal band, doesn’t mean you have to be serious, and that Chris Bowes is the biggest clown of them all.

At the Organ with Chris Bowes, is a drunken work of comedy gold. The music is poor, the production is terrible, but what shines out is how funny it is, and hopefully this will be the first of many comedy solo albums from the Alestorm front man! [7/10]
