At Dawn’s Edge – interview

With glowing comparisons to Within Temptation, Epica, and Nightwish, At Dawn’s Edge release their brand new video single for Evil Flamingo this month, right now, we sat down with the band a brief chat….

What is the full band line-up, who plays what? Ashavari Joshi – Vocals; Alexandru Oprea – Guitars; Matt Ozzy – Guitars; Jacob Osbourne Bechard – Drums.

How and when did the band form? At Dawn’s Edge was founded in 2009 by guitarist Alexandru Oprea, with long time member and guitarist Matthew Ozzorluoglu, while attending early high school. The band had previously underwent a series of name changes, and continued to evolve their line-up until 2013, when they met Ashavari Joshi, and Jacob Osbourne Bechard. The concept, musically, started as a simple one: to unite the beautiful and the heavy into one metal project.

Toronto is a diverse urban center in Canada that lends itself to a culture of varying tastes, interests, and lifestyles. With this comes a rich community of talented and unique musicians, and instrumentalists.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying? In mid-2014 we noticed audience members asking us more and more, “So, where can I find your album?” but we only had live videos to offer at the time. Although we weren’t ready for a full-length release yet, we decided to take action and agreed on 3 of our songs to put on our EP, First Contact, which came out in the spring of 2015. We grew a lot in that time, professionally and creatively. It was through that decision-making process, and the writing and recording we undertook that we truly came together as a unit.

What are your musical influences? Having a group of culturally diverse members, with Italian, Armenian, Romanian, and Indian heritage in the mix, we often look to a variety of traditional music that inspire new melodies, feelings, and soundscapes. Although the specific interests may differ, with Alex currently having a strong emotional link to flamenco playing, while Matt finds himself revisiting Balkan music quite often, in the end we all converge our findings and inspirations into our At Dawn’s Edge sound.

Where have you played or toured? We’ve played in Ontario and Quebec, frequently in Toronto and Montreal.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out
there?
We bring groove to full orchestral arrangements by intertwining complex rhythms with melodic, and symphonic elements.

Do you have a tour on the horizon?
Our plan is to tour across several more provinces in Canada, and start playing in the U.S. as soon as the album is released.
