Decrypted – Get Grilled

Multi-cultural Londoners, DECRYPTED plan their assault on the UK backed by a slew of influences panning from Death Remains, Killswitch Engage, to Hacktivist. DECRYPTED release the track ‘EOEE’ on 29th September. Prior to this, we asked the band to introduce themselves:

What is the full band line-up, who plays what?

Decrypted are: frontman Steve Kerr, bassist Rafal Siek, guitarist Martin Luczynski, guitarist and backing vocalist Ricardo Almeida, and drummer Vincent Labelle.

How and when did the band form?

I guess London would be our unified hometown; It’s where we practice, play and hangout. We, as a band, are a testament to the diversity and multiculturalism London has to offer. As a collective, we evidence the theory that music creates bonds.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

(As cliche as it sounds…) Our relationship solidified once we all realised we are in this for the long hull. We became a family. There is always an aura of respect, understanding and growth when we are together. We are all Decrypted, not just one, but all of us. We all have multiple pieces to fit the puzzle. And we tailor each of our strengths and weaknesses together to form this communal mural that represents us.

What are your musical influences?

Killswitch Engage & Periphery

Where did the name of band come from?

We live in an age where most of what we see and hear is behind a digital screen. Feelings are, now more than ever, masked – encrypted behind computer code.
Another day, another social media post, another misleading news article…
While we should embrace technology, sometimes it’s important to take a step back, hence the need to Decrypt, go back to our roots and stay true to ourselves. We think our sound reflects that, combining modern sounds with the origins of Metalcore.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? are you friends from school or any family relations?

The band started as a project, originally called Slies, dreamt up in Poland by Martin with a vocalist friend.
A few years after moving to London (and a handful of scrapped music projects later), he decided to take action and started looking through musician classified-type ads to find his own line-up.
That’s essentially how we all came to meet – through online ads (Bandmix, Gumtree, etc).
In the early days (2013), it was basically just Martin and Ed (former drummer) jamming in Ed’s small East London flat.
When you move away from where you were raised, you essentially lose all of your social connections. And with no school friends, family friends or even friends of friends, it was definitely quite the challenge to find musicians that fit the profile; creatively but, specially, character-wise too. Perhaps that struggle in itself is part of what makes our bond so strong.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

Our sincerity, honesty and, above all, passion towards our music and community. We make music for us. We bare our souls and break our skin for the comradery and endorphin release that comes with being part of something bigger than ourselves. Our music keeps us grounded, keeps us sane and we invite all to take this journey with us.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

An explosion of emotion. Fast playful riffs and heavy breakdowns combined with vocals that are as grim and aggressive as they are clean and melodic.

Do you have a tour on the horizon?

Nothing set in stone as yet but we plan on touring throughout 2018 to support our upcoming EP: Solitude of Self Awareness.
