Summary:

DeWolff may not be well known in the UK, but they certainly deserve to be - this is a fantastic album.

DeWolff are a Dutch band, from the town of Geleen, right in the South of the country near Maastricht. They’re a three-piece psychedelic rock band that formed in 2007. Since then they’ve released six studio albums and a live album with them all reaching the Dutch music charts and have played gigs across Europe including support slots to The Black Keys, Blues Pills and Deep Purple and have played festivals including playing to 30,000 people at Lowlands festival. This is their seventh studio album.

There’s a very definite 70s feel to the music, but it’s not just mere nostalgia – the fact it’s different to most bands around means it stands out as something a bit different and in that respect is a breath of fresh air. Despite having been a band for just over a decade they’re all still young and that may have contributed to the energy being higher than you might expect with psychedelic rock.

This album was definitely a surprise to me – while it has a 70s sound, it doesn’t feel as dated as you’d expect. The songs are all excellent and they’re performed beautifully. The lyrics certainly aren’t dated, with songs about current social or political issues such as “Deceit & woo” written as Trump was inaugurated, and “Bit talk” focussing on the controversial Dutch right wing politician, Geert Wilders.

DeWolff may not be well known in the UK, but they certainly deserve to be – this is a fantastic album.
