Summary:

This is not just another live DVD - this is a DVD of a very special emotional night for Eagles of Death Metal and their fans just a few months after the traumatic experiences at the Bataclan.

In November 2015, the music world was shocked to the core when terrorists attacked the Eagles of Death Metal concert at the Bataclan in Paris leaving 89 people dead. Just three months later, the band returned to Paris and played a show at the Olympia venue. At the time, singer Jesse Hughes had this to say…”The people of Paris have always been incredible to us and our feeling of love towards this beautiful city and it’s people has been reinforced a million times over this pat month. Hearing the stories of the survivors and the injured and those who have lost loved ones has been overwhelming. Not returning to finish our set was never an option”.

That February 2016 show was filmed and recorded and is now being released on double CD, BluRay and DVD through Eagle Vision.

If you knew nothing about the circumstances behind this concert then you could listen to the CDs and enjoy it as what it is – a great live album. The band focus on playing and it’s only in the first song that they acknowledge what happened, pausing mid song and saying “Lets take a moment to remember and we’ll get back to the fun”, then resuming the song after a few moments of total silence from the audience and band. Apart from that it’s only when Jesse Hughes talks to the crowd that you hear the emotion in his voice and realise this isn’t just any old concert – there’s something special here.
I do love their version of the Stealers Wheel classic “Stuck in the middle with you” – “Stuck in the metal”.

The CD version is a 2 CD package featuring all 19 songs from the show. The CD inlay card unfolds to reveal some photos and a dedication – This CD is dedicated to Nick Alexander, Thomas Ayad, the 89 victims at the Bataclan on November 13th 2015 and the victims of terrorism all around the world.

The DVD and BluRay versions include three bonus tracks filmed at the band’s october 2015 performance at L.A.’s Terragram ballroom.

While I like the CD version, the DVD or BluRay takes things to another level. Yes it’s a good live DVD, but the real beauty of watching the show is that you get to see how the band are reacting to things. Normally bands come on stage after the intro and launch straight into the first song, but not here – instead the band took to the stage and it was probably a good couple of minutes before they started. In that time the band, Jesse Hughes in particular were visibly moved by the warm reception they got and the emotions of the evening were clear to see. They visibly seemed to struggle to strat, but once they started playing adrenaline seemed to kick in and they got down to it, but the pauses between songs seemed to bring the emotions back to the front.
