When I spoke to Estrella a few months ago they were just back from a European tour and were planning to get into the studioartworks-000088603675-8mw1bb-t500x500 to start work on their much anticipated second album, a follow up to the hugely successful Come Out To Play.  Since then they’ve announced another Euro tour, this time in support of former Guns n Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke.  They are a band in demand, and so it’s amazing that they’ve even found the time to record new single Whatever It Is, let alone make it as good as it is!  The single will be released on October 13th.

I’m listening to Whatever It Is on repeat as I write this review, which is making it difficult as I keep getting carried away, waving my arms in the air in a kind of sitting at my desk dance and singing loudly and far less tunefully than frontman Paul Gunn.  I’m on about the sixth or seventh play now and far from getting fed up I’m enjoying it more with each play.  It’s pure classic rock, harking back to Estrella’s obvious influences in the form of Def Leppard and Van Halen.  I’d also be surprised to find out that Paul hadn’t been in front of the mirror with a hairbrush and a Motley Crue cassette at some point in his formative years!  Nowadays, however, instead of dreaming about being like those bands Estrella are well on the way to joining them.  The single is one of the catchiest songs I’ve heard this year, and when Estrella hit Bannermans in Edinburgh with Gilby Clarke in November I’m willing to bet the Estrella Warriors will have every word memorised.  As good as he is Estrella are far more than just their singer and I’ve got to mention some just brilliant lead guitar work as usual from Luke who is something special indeed.  The guitar solo in the track is amazing.  Along with guitarist Nathan and drummer Leo, these four are some of the most hard working guys you’ll meet, combining touring with recording album number two, and promoting and releasing a single.  There’s not enough hours in the day for Estrella, but they wouldn’t have it any other way.
