Evil Scarecrow Review – Hammerfest IV

Friday night saw many a clash of stages with me for one being torn between which bands to go see first. However, given the interview I had undertaken earlier in the day, there was no question of me not heading over to Stage 2 to see Evil Scarecrow perform. They certainly have their own unique interview style, so I was looking forward to seeing what they would bring to the stage. If you haven’t seen them live before you may draw certain conclusions by their stage appearance and their interesting lyrics. However, as Dr Hell says himself, it’s something that really needs to be seen – and see it you must.

This was the first time I had seen them perform and I must have liked it as I never did managed to make my way over to Stage 1 for Evile. What am I saying ‘must have liked it’? Of course I did it; they are nothing if not entertaining. How could they not be? With a robot called Slagbot and song titles such as ‘Sixty Six Minutes Past Six’ and ‘Vampyre Trousers’ (hmm, painful thought), let’s face it they were never going to be dull. Though I wasn’t quite prepared for their attempt at breaking the record for the most number of party poppers going off at one time. Don’t worry, no party poppers were harmed during the breaking of this record as real ones were not allowed. So instead the crowd were asked to dust off their acting skills to raise their arms and voices and become the party poppers. (Personally I thought my performance was very convincing.) They also got the crowd to shout out a hello to Evile who were playing on Stage 1 at the same time.

Being put against Evile in the lineup was never going to be great, but the number of people that turned up to watch Evil Scarecrow speaks volumes for their performance and ability to entertain, but also for themselves as musicians; they do what they do and they do it well. ‘Thundercats’ and ‘Last Battle of the Unicorns’ both started to cheers from the audience who were obviously very familiar with the songs on the set. However, they were also treated to ‘Book of Doom’ that had yet to be released – watch out for this one.

The last three songs were my favourites as I love the way ‘Blacken the Everything’ starts and ends and it is even better live. This was followed by everyone’s favourite, ‘Robotatron’ and did the audience dance? Yes of course we did! It must have looked seriously bloody funny from where the band were standing to watch the whole audience move as one, as it looked great from where I was standing being a little robot. In fact, now that I think about it, we as an audience did pretty much everything Dr Hell told us to do. You could suggest that this was due to mind control, but it is something much simpler and more basic than that; sheer bloody fun. How can it now with Slagbot in the audience?

This for me was one of the best sets of the whole weekend and certainly gave other bands on the lineup a run for their money. Quite literally in Brother Pain’s case as he jumped of the stage and took a run through the crowd. If you haven’t seen them play yet, get onto their Facebook page and find one near you. http://www.facebook.com/Evil.Scarecrow#!/Evil.Scarecrow/events
