Summary:

On 'Scars', Forever Still intertwine light and dark, melody and discord, with elements of pop and metal to give us music ready to take on the globe.

Hailing from Denmark, Forever Still is a 4 piece band fronted by the super talented Maja Schønning. To date they have released two EP’s, the second of which, ‘Scars’ was unleashed towards the end of 2014. The EP’s are set to combine with two further releases and be released as a full album later this year. Scars is a collection of three songs that showcase all the talent that Forever Still has to offer.

The title track ‘Scars’ rips open with a bruising riff from the offset. Maja’s voice immediately makes a serious impact, like that first time you realise you are listening to something special. On first listen you try to liken her to other vocalists; at times delicate like Lacey Sturm and bestial like Angela Gossow. Her tone is soothing and warming but there is an allusion to a very different power. Her schizophrenic growl is not overdone in a song where melody is key and aggression is channelled where appropriate. ‘Once Upon A Nightmare’ with the line “so sick of trying to get rid of u” is an emotionally layered offering that is a slow burner of a song. This often bodes well for a tune as it will ensure staying power as the listener revisits and continually finds hidden depths beneath the skin. The piano shrouded ‘Miss Madness’ brings the vocal talent to the fore. It is a different yet natural change in style that maintains the band’s core power albeit via a different vector. With simple and clear arrangement, the production on Scars is slick and shows the scope of the band.

On ‘Scars’, Forever Still intertwine light and dark, melody and discord, with elements of pop and metal to give us music ready to take on the globe. Scars is one of the most exciting new releases in the last 12 months and if there is justice in the music world, 2015 has to be the year of Forever Still.
