Juodvarnis – Pre Fest Interview Wacken 2014

Juodvarnis are the Lithuanian winners of this years Wacken Metal Battle. They play at Wacken along with all the other Metal Battle winners from all over the world to compete for the Over All Metal Battle Champion!

JUODVARNISCan you give the readers a quick introduction to the band.

Juodvarnis (Black Raven in english) is a pagan metal band from Vilnius, Lithuania. The band was created at 2011. Since then we played at all major metal festivals in our country. In March of 2013 we released our debut album “Šauksmai Iš Praeities” (Cries from the past).

How would you describe your sound?

The inspirations to our sound comes from different genres. In our opinion our sound is a mixture of heavy, black, doom and progressive metal.

How would you describe the metal music scene in your country? What has changed over the last few years.

Metal music scene is still an underground in Lithuania, but the popularity of this genre is constantly growing. Many new bands are born each year and the amount of new albums is also growing. But still there is only very little recognition of metal bands in mass media.

Why did you enter the WOA Metal Battle Competition?

One of the things is the opportunity to perform in the biggest metal festival in Europe, to show our music to this massive community and somehow to get recognized outside our country’s borders. Our lyrics are in Lithuanian and the sound of our language is not usual to worldwide metal fans, so we are somehow fresh thing in this major worldwide metal family. And also, we think that we are ready to win this competition.

What was your initial reaction when you found out that you have won & you were playing at Wacken.

That moment was absolutely amazing, we were really happy. We promised our Lithuanian fans, that we are going to bring a little part of Lithuania to Germany :).

What was the best and worst part of the competition for you?

The best of course was the announcement of our victory in national final and the worst I think was the waiting for the announcement, it was really nerve wrecking.

Would you recommend the competition to other bands? Any hints/tips for bands that are looking to enter.

Of course we would recommend that. First of all the national final is not only a competition, but also a good concert, with professional stage and equipment. Everything is prepared to make a good performance. And secondly the opportunity to perform in Wacken is very tempting. If you believe in what you are playing – go for it and maybe you will win.

What can the audience expect from you at the festival.

A dose of Lithuanian pagan metal, the fresh thing that they never heard before.

Wacken 2014 Metal BattleWhat has been the bands biggest achievement so far?

Winning the WMB national final.

Have you ever been to Wacken before? If so when and what did you enjoy most about it.

No, it will be our first time.

What is your opinion of the Wacken line-up?

The line-up is really great, there will be many bands that we are definitely go to listen to.

Can you sum up Wacken in one sentence?

It will be an experience for a lifetime.

Any message you wish to pass on to the PM readers?

We hope to see you guys at W.E.T stage on Thursday 2:20 P.M. !!!
