Summary:

a great album full of tracks that remind me why I loved Lordi in the first place, and why they are still exciting and relevant in the hard rock music scene

Sexorcism is the 9th Studio release from Finnish Hard Rock Monsters Lordi and is said to be ‘their most controversial album to date’. I was eager to give it a listen having been under their spell since I first saw them 13 years ago at their debut UK show. Lordi have always delivered what I look for from a band; a fully immersive experience. It’s one thing pulling that off at a live show, but a lot harder to achieve that through an album. This is something the previous albums have achieved for me, and Sexoricism is no different. It’s all the little details dotted throughout the album, and of course the tradition of a ‘Scartic Circle Gathering’ Track to really tie the theme together for the album.

Kicking off with title track ‘Sexorcism’, I can see why some fans are a little divided on the change of focus from the usual monster and horror fuelled songs; but it in hind sight looking back at previous album Monstereophonic (Theaterror vs. Demonarchy) and the video for ‘Hug You Hardcore’ it’s a progression from there. However I am sure fans will be happy once they give it a spin, as to me ‘Sexorcism’ has all the elements I have grown to love about Lordi, but also exploring some new directions.

Track 3 ‘Your Toungue’s Got The Cat’ has very familiar feeling which takes me back to their 2006 album ‘The Monsterican Dream’ having just released a lyric video to start teasing the new album, this is the perfect track to give you a taste of what is to come. Leading into ‘Naked In My Cellar’ with a bass heavy intro, which is always a good way to get my attention!

Something I’ve always said Lordi don’t get enough recognition for is they put out some top quality and interesting riffs, that was something I have loved about them ever since hearing ‘Blood Red Sandman’ for the first time. This album absolutely lives up to my expectaions with some absolute gems littered throughout the album. ‘Slashion Model Girls’ is another that with the combination of bass lead choruses, matched with an addictive chorus, again I find this one a haunting nod to the pre-eurovision era of Lordi.

It’s difficult for me to pick a favourite from ‘Sexorcism’as I enjoyed the album as a whole so much. The final track ‘Haunting Season’ is a contender though nicely synth heavy and big sing-along choruses, as well as maintaining the dark and eerie feeling captured through-out the album.

Overall I am loving ‘Sexoricm’ I was anxious seeing one of my favourite bands looking like they were trying a new direction; however it is a great album full of tracks that reminded me why I loved Lordi in the first place, and why they are still exciting and relevant in the hard rock music scene, not just for their jaw-dropping live performances, but also putting out a new record of this high caliber.
