Summary:

I really have been lucky this year with so many highly anticipated releases; one I have been eagerly awaiting is Mercy Isle’s new EP Storm. Having been lucky enough the last few years to see Kassandra Novell in action at Metal Female Voices Festival, I knew Mercy Isle would be something special. Kassandra really has one of the best voices out there, one of the biggest highlights of MFVF for me last year was when she covered Tarja – I Walk Alone, and Storm has shown even more so what a great vocalist she is.

There have been some fantastic releases this year so far; one I have been eagerly awaiting is Mercy Isle’s new EP; Storm.  Having been lucky enough the last few years to see Kassandra Novell in action at Metal Female Voices Festival, I knew Mercy Isle would be something special.  Kassandra really has one of the best voices out there, one of the biggest highlights of MFVF for me last year was witnessing her cover Tarja – I Walk Alone, and Storm has shown even more so what a great vocalist she is.

What makes Mercy Isle really special is these talented musicians coming together and creating something really unique.  After a bit of debate I decided they fit best in the symphonic gothic metal category (no not female fronted that’s not a genre, and I don’t like every band with a female singer being giving that label, it’s like saying for example, Halestorm and Arch Enemy are the same genre of music, which is ridiculous, so you won’t see me doing that!)

Storm kicks off with ‘I’m Gonna Make It’ throwing you into the world of Mercy Isle; something that really stands out for me is Chad Novell’s incredible bass work, being a bassist I can’t help but be tuned in to every bass-line, and I have to say thank you Chad they are all a treat!  Another personal favourite of mine is No One Will Save You, starting with just vocals and Joop on Keyboards, then building up with the addition of Chad’s backing vocals, which work really beautifully with Kassandra’s.

Storm was successfully launched through Indiegogo and included some of my favourite perks I’ve ever seen; from the Dirty Metal Head package, including the EP and some handmade soap by Kassandra, and another package including her home-made cookies!

I suggest all of you symphonic gothic metal fans grab yourself a copy of Storm, and I really hope we will get the chance to see Mercy Isle live as soon as possible!  Storm scores 4 stars from me; my only criticism is I need more songs, so I am looking forward to what the future holds for Mercy Isle; Storm is out October 16th.
