Summary:

“Totally Stripped” is a must have release, giving the viewer an inside look at the Rolling Stones in an intimate venue setting, backstage, studio and is a must have for your collection.

The original Stripped was a 1995 retrospective album where the Rolling Stones went back into the studio at the end of their world record breaking Voodoo Lounge tour.

The Stripped project saw The Stones stripping back tracks from their back catalogue, complete with a couple of carefully chosen covers and recording them in the studio, they then toured this idea in very intimate club venues, a million miles away from the previous arena tour.

The end result was that the 1995 Stripped CD had 14 tracks, of which eight were “live in the studio” and the other six taken from those small concerts.

This new Totally Stripped release from Castle Rock features all three of those gigs in their entirety, The Paradiso in Amsterdam on 26 May 1995, L’Olympia in Paris on 3 July and the London Brixton Academy on 19 July. There is also a 14-track CD of selected live tracks (not the same as the original CD), and a documentary on a separate disk, if you buy the extended version.

My all-time favourite Rolling Stones track is Gimme Shelter, and the version on here is simply breath taking, long-term Stones backing singer Lisa Fischer delivers ‘that’ vocal which up to now only Merry Clayton’s original has never been matched, Lisa though owns the stage, toying with the band in the vocal lead up, and then she nails it. The dynamic solo of Ronnie Wood’s is still echoing as Lisa grabs the song and sings those immortal lines: “Rape, murder, it’s just a shot away”. Quite simply, stunning, and worth the price of this dvd alone.

Other highlights include “Honky Tonk Woman”, “Dead Flowers” and “Miss You” with its superb Piano break and Sax solo really lifting this song. The mighty “Brown Sugar”, “Jumpin Jack Flash” are still performed with relish, like they were only recorded yesterday. “Midnight Rambler” is equally impressive for a band who have just finished a world tour, most other bands would scatter to the four corners of the globe for some well deserved R&R, not so the Rolling Stones. You can tell they love nothing more than being on stage, and these simple gigs must have felt like a relief from the pressure cooker world of arena touring.
