Summary:

“Live At The Opera” is exceptional work by Satyricon, with one of the biggest cooperations that this duo has ever made. The quality of the performance of both Satyricon and Norwegian Nation Opera Chorus, music and the amazing atmosphere of the Opera is brilliant and definitely must see material.

The solemn and eloquent darkness with the few spots of light. The drums rises up from the under floor in the side of the massive stage. Perfect lighting setting hits the stage and then Frost starts hitting the drums and Satyr comes up from the floor too and so begins the march of Satyricon in the Norwegian National Opera. For someone that might sound like absolute dream and for Satyr it is how the grandiose dream came true.

Live At The Opera

Satyricon is one of the iconic Norwegian black metal bands – there is no big introduction needed. They released 8 full-length albums and countless EP, singles, splits.. and now there is live album and DVD “Live At The Opera” to add to all this solid discography. Only the idea of Satyricon cooperating with Norwegian National Opera chorus gives the shivers and all this hour and a half spent watching the DVD did not seem too long. Although the camera work is not as brilliant as it could be, Satyr’s wish was not to disturb audience with camera cranes in the front was fair enough and the view is still enjoyable. The splendid lights, huge stage seats all over the place and balconies are the signs of the Opera and they definitely add the special atmosphere to the event. Because of that, it took couple of groovy songs to get people out of their chairs so it would look like a proper black metal concert. The audience was super supportive but there were no moshpit, proper headbang or any kind of that whatsoever – the Opera is a sanctuary for people who behave.

The concert consists of 14 songs, 3 of them were the encore. The setlist was really great built, including both legendary old songs as “Mother North”, more modern anthems as “Repined Bastard Nation” and black n roll track “K.I.N.G.” and songs from the newest albums, like “Tro og kraft”, very special “Pheonix” with lovely voice owner Sivert Høyem and “Nocturnal Flare”. The only thing that was missing next to the legendary “Mother North” was “Nemesis Divina” but Satyricon has so much to offer and time has its own limits.

In addition to the enjoyable DVD material there are two more CD, where are all the songs that were played during the concert – something that refreshes your memory of old and new tracks for listening at home and feel like.. in the Opera.
