SCARLETINAS – Get Grilled….

Just before the SCARLETINAS headed off on tour, we had a talk to the alt-rockers about their beginnings and more….

First off, who’s in the band?

Marc Hayward – Vocals/Guitar, Dan Williams – Vocals/Guitar, Jim Portas – Drums, and Billy Burgess – Bass.

How and when did the band form?

We formed at the beginning of 2016 in Kentish Town/Holloway. Three of us had all played together over the past few years by chance in different things and when me and Dan decided to form Scarletinas we then bumped into the other guys… literally. I had just moved in round the corner from Jim and we started talking again in a corner shop and Billy was in our local The Abbey Tavern…

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

From the moment that me and Dan wrote the first two tracks for the band, ‘Hideaway’ and ‘On The Run’ round at my old flat above Nambucca (the venue). The sun was blazing through the windows and it kind of set the tone for the songs as they grew. Ever since then if we write something new or rehearse on a day when the sun’s out we know we’re on to a good thing…

What are your musical influences?

Everything seeps into the songs eventually… whether it be music, film, surroundings, experiences… Musically if the guitars are big and the drums are loud then it’s going to be smashing around already inside our heads but lyrically, in the case of ‘On The Run’ and a new track ‘Under The Neon Lights’ it’s us writing a kind of condensed film screenplay – they are going to be amazing music videos -, ‘You’ comes from feeling alien in your own skin and ‘Walls Down’, the new single, from tapping deep into your own soul and the way it’s affecting exact times in your life.

Where did the name of band come from?

It’s the name of a mushroom that is red and turns blue as soon as it’s cut… It’s also the Latin for Scarlet fever but we prefer the mushroom reason.

Where have you played or toured?

Supported The Rifles on their UK tour as well as their three sold out London Christmas 2016 shows.

Supported The Graveltones on three of their German shows early 2017.

Played Glastonbury 2017.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Losing yourself in massive choruses, crashing drums, thunderous bass and loud loud loud guitars… let yourself go and forget the world outside and get sweaty…..

Do you have a tour on the horizon?

We are heading off around Europe this Saturday (last week) supporting the amazing Kitty, Daisy & Lewis on their European tour for two weeks. There are some huge venues which we can’t wait to play…
