Summary:

It's all too easy to compare like for like, but Sister Sin are up there with Smashed Gladys, Princess Pang and Skew Siskin i.e. a fantastic but, unfortunately, not particularly renowned female fronted heavy rock band.

Swedish Metal Band Sister Sin’s first album Dance of the Wicked was originally released in 2013. Ten years later it has been re-released by Victory Records. Now with, not only all 8 original tracks but, 3 previously unreleased demo tracks, and a bonus track featuring German Rock Goddess Doro Pesch.

Long standing fans will, no doubt, know all the 8 original tracks well. The opening track Kiss the Sky started with a bit of radio interference, which had me going to adjust the frequency on my laptop! A good, punchy opener to showcase Liv’s impressive vocal range. I was picking up elements of R.E.M. in Love Lies, a slower number, and picked up similarities to Skid Row and Aerosmith throughout. I didn’t really see why the short instrumental track End of the Beginning was needed, it wasn’t particularly rocking but, apart from that, some good tracks Dirty Damn I being my favorite from the original album, reminiscent of W.A.S.P!

The 3 demo tracks were, however, my favorites from the 2013 edition, Minor You (Major Me), Head Over Heels in Love and Writing on the Wall being of a similar style to metal greats Motley Crue. All great fast paced rock tracks! I also loved the bonus track Rock N’ Roll, featuring Doro Pesch, with fast drumming and some great riffs. It was worth listening for that track alone!

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
