The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back – M2TM Ireland Finalist 2015 – Interview

The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back have arguably the the best name in this year’s Metal 2 The Masses Ireland. Thankfully, they are much more than just a cool name as their brutality has slayed the audiences from the first round all the way to the final. We caught up the lads ahead of their first Bloodstock Final.

For people hearing about The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back for the first time. Tell us about yourselves?

We are a four piece metal band based in Dublin but we’re a bit scattered as to where we are from. We cover Meath, Kildare, Donegal and Dublin. We are a band that work hard we are not going a long time (as TDWHSB) and in the short time we are we have accomplished quite a bit and made some noise while doing so. As far as what we are about its just heavy music. Our music is very riff driven and we just love creating those moments in music that make you want to bang your head jump up and down and kill!

Congratulations on reaching the Final of Metal 2 The Masses. Personally, I feel that everyone in the final is a winner but if you were to be chosen to represent Ireland at Bloodstock, what would it mean to The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back?

It’d just be a huge privilege, on a stage devoted to new bands we would be representing Ireland and that’s just beyond words

How has the overall M2TM experience been this year for your band?

Dylan: Absolute hell on my neck, after each round I can’t move my head for about a week after headbanging so hard. It’s been great though, especially to get the judges vote in the semi-final that meant so much to us. Besides that we’ve gotten talking to a lot of bands that we never would have come in contact with before, I think despite the fact that it’s a competition everyone will appreciate that whoever wins is gonna make England realise we’ve got a fuckload to offer in the world of metal

Mick: Fantastic experience and really fun. It has expanded our bands reach and we’ve made some great new friends.

Stephen: Been an awesome experience, we’ve learned loads from other bands and we’ve made a lot of friends through the competition and given us a lot of experience from playing with some of the bigger bands in Dublin!

Ryan:  Its been pretty cool, I’ve had a lot of fun participating in the competition and all the bands have been kick ass

What would you say to bands thinking about applying for next year’s competition?

Dylan: Just fuckin do it, we had barely been playing gigs for 5 months when we applied, and now we’re in the final. The worst that can come out of it will be that you get to play one deadly gig and meet a load of deadly people

Mick: Go for it! No matter what it’s only good that will come of it. And it’s a lot of fun

Stephen: Definitely go for it, even if you don’t win, the experience and craic alone is totally worth it cause you’ll understand how tough the competition around Ireland is and it’s a great way to meet new bands and friends

Ryan:  I’d say definitely sign up, I never thought we’d even make it to the semis never mind the final, so ya never know what’s possible
Has there been a memorable moment that stands out in your mind at the shows to date?

Dylan: When Kev announced we’d be in the final, I still remember it so clearly. While we were playing though, I remember starting ‘Toothless’ off at the semi-finals and Garreth from Theories Divide was standing there screaming all the lyrics along with Steve, that was deadly for me just to see someone knowing the words to our song

Mick: Being selected by the judges to go to the final would be my highlight. Makes it feel like all of our hard work has paid off

Stephen: Seeing people singing the lyrics to our song Toothless back to us during semi finals was pretty fucking awesome, I’d say that would be my highlight

Ryan: Seeing people mosh and sing along during the semi final was pretty cool, even if it’s only two or three people that shit is still cool And getting a judge vote, that was deadly

In 5 words, describe what we can expect from you at the final.

Pure aggression and fucking mayhem

If you could pick one song from your arsenal to let the uninitiated hear what your band is all about, what would it be?

‘Eat This’, it’s what’s we’re all about, it’s a middle finger to the world, it’s schizophrenic, it’s all hell breaking loose in three minutes or less.

***Breaking news** The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back will release ‘Eat This’ on Tuesday May 12th.
