The Dirty Panties – I am a robot

the dirty panties - i am a robotThe Dirty Panties are an all-female punk band from Las Vegas, who certainly have the best band name I’ve heard so far this year. The band formed in New York in 2001 before moving to Las Vegas, and unlike many of the bands around who call themselves punk, but are more pop than punk, The Dirty Panties are part of the real punk music scene.  Punk and metal are very similar genres at times, and certainly this album does remind me of Girlschool at times – it’s good and heavy and songs like “Take it to the grave” with the rest of the band doing some of the vocals does have that Girlschool feel.
Throughout the album you’re struck by the f**k you attitude that comes through clearly, and alongside the music is a key part of the punk sound.
Brief comments on a couple of the tracks…

“Money (that’s what I want)” is a cover version of a song that’s been covered by bands including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kingsmen, Flying Lizzards, The Supremes and more, but despite all the different cover versions, this could well be the first punk cover of it.  It works really well – it’s the best cover of this song that I’ve heard.

“Pretty in pink” is about being female punks, with it’s lyrics “I never wanted to be pretty in pink, and I never really get what other people would think and I never really cared what other people would say, that a real girl would never act this way”.  It sums up their attitude – doing what they want rather than worrying about other peoples opinions.  It’s a great song and a nice end to the album.

This isome great punk from these American ladies.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album and intend to keep an eye out for future releases from the band.

“I am a robot” is out now on Squidhat records.
