Timewaves – Pre Fest Interview Wacken 2014

Timewaves are the Norwegian winners of this years Wacken Metal Battle. They play at Wacken along with all the other Metal Battle winners from all over the world to compete for the Over All Metal Battle Champion!

Timewaves, NorwayCan you give the readers a quick introduction to the band.

Timewaves is a band with a high energy level when it comes to musical performance. Our audience rarely looks bored when we start to play, but of course there will always be the guy who stands completely still with a beer in his hand. The music is large and mighty with thrashing riffs and blast beats from another dimension. The most important thing for us is the connection we get with the audience when we start to play. You will not be disappointed.

How would you describe your sound.

Our sound is nothing less than brutal. It can be described as a mixture of epic melodic phrases and American groove metal. We try our best to make the music sound as natural as possible, and if there is something we don’t like about a song we will rework it or throw it straight out the window.

How would you describe the metal music scene in your country? What has changed over the last few years.

Over the last few years we´ve seen a lot of younger bands taking inspiration from big american bands like Lamb of God and Suicide Silence. It´s safe to say that subgenres like Djent and Deathcore has influenced a lot of underground metal bands from Norway lately.

The most known metal bands from Norway are still bands who had a lot of success in the 90´s like Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, Immortal and Mayhem. And then there are newer bands like Kvelertak and Purified in Blood who also are starting to become quite known in the metal arena.

Why did you enter the WOA Metal Battle Competition.

Actually we did not sign up for the competition because at the time we had almost disbanded. We were more concerned about getting our band back together than applying for the competition.
The reason we found ourselves in the middle of the whole WOA scene was due to the promoter asking us if we were interested in playing in the finale after they received a recommendation from the band members in Faanefjell – who won the WOA Norwegian Metal Battle in 2012. They probably asked us because there were no contestants from this part of the country. There wasn´t even any semi-final here in the south of Norway. After we received the invitation we asked our former bassist and drummer if they wanted to join the band again. Luckily they did and we accepted the promoters offer.

What was your initial reaction when you found out that you have won & you were playing at Wacken.

We went absolutely crazy and couldn’t stop smiling. There was also a lot of screaming in the car on the way home. We still can’t quite get that we’re actually playing at Wacken!

What was the best and worst part of the competition for you?

The best part was the concert we played – best concert we ever played. The worst part was driving 12 hours to get to the stage. We had all slept around three hours the day before just to make it! We were a tiny bit tired the day of the concert. And we also had to kill an injured bird on the way, but that’s metal, I guess?

Would you recommend the competition to other bands. Any hints/tips for bands that are looking to enter.

Definitely! This competition will bring out the best in every band as the reward is grand. Our tips would be to establish a connection with the audience and make the concert feel alive and unrehearsed. Of course you should rehearse until you start hating the songs, but that is only so you can enjoy the concert to its fullest potential.

What can the audience expect from you at the festival.

An energy filled show with a lot of attitude. When we start playing, nothing else matters in the world to us. We strive to create a connection and an emotion that you get from seeing your favorite band playing live.

Wacken 2014 Metal BattleWhat has been the bands biggest achievement so far?

Playing at Wacken, without doubt!

Have you ever been to Wacken before? If so when and what did you enjoy most about it’

No, we haven’t, but we always wanted to go. This will probably be a great first impression!

What is your opinion of the Wacken line-up.

It is out of this world. There are so many of the bands that we look up to! Being a part of the line-up is nothing less than an honor, to be frank! Steel Panther, Hammerfall, Arch Enemy, Megadeth, Emperor, Carcass, Devin Townsend Project, August Burns Red and Fleshgod Apocalypse are some of the band we are dying to see!

Can you sum up Wacken in one sentence?

Heavy Metal Mecca!

Any message you wish to pass on to the PM readers.
