We Are the Ocean seem to have come out of hiding in the past two years, releasing two great albums in the space of these two years. Combined to 2010’s effort Cutting Our Teeth, new album Go Now and Live shows this Essex hardcore band maturing both lyrically and musically, giving their fans a superb collection of shout out loud hits which sum up We Are the Ocean in just over 30 minutes of bouncy, catchy rock anthems, showing just how good the British metal scene is. Powerful, emotional, but never the less energetic!
While We Are the Ocean probably will not appeal to your everyday Cannibal Corpse fan, this band have built up a gathering of fans of all ki
nds of music, based on the fact that there is so much diversity musically on their records. You have aspects of: Rock, Pop, Punk, Ballad and metalcore which means most people can put Go now and Live on their stereo and enjoy tracks like the very meaningful ‘Runaway’, the amazing ‘What it Feels Like’ which is guaranteed to make anybody jump up and down no matter where they are or what they are doing at the time, and ‘The Waiting Room’ which contains one hell of a bouncy guitar line.
The idea of having two vocalists makes the We Are the Ocean experience all the more special, as vocalists Dan Brown and Liam Cromby battle it out in the melodic vs. screamo vocal lines which not only show that these guys are two of the best vocalists from the 21st century, but also make songs like ‘Overtime is a Crime’ and ‘Godspeed’ seem like drama over music.
Unfortunately it seems like towards the end of Go Now and Live; We Are the Ocean have started to run out of ideas and see to be repeating song structure and ideas seen earlier in the album. This is really annoying as Go now and Live would be an absolutely amazing album is there had been a few more ideas in the works, and the three closing tracks ‘Now and Then’, ‘Follow What you Need’ and ‘Before I die’ where that little bit different. Keep it in mind that We Are the Ocean are still young and their combined age only just reaches 100, so with time and a few more albums down the line, We Are the Ocean could be on top form.
With killer vocal lines, hooky guitar riffs; and a very dramatic approach to hardcore. We Are the Ocean show why they are the kings of modern day metal! [7/10]
