These days its rare to hear a bigger buzz about a bands live performance than their recorded music. Having seen London newcomers Zoax blow the stage away at Takedown Festival last month, we are intrigued to see if their debut E.P.  XIII stands up to the hype. Barely a year old, the quintet are the project of AxeWound and ex-Rise To Remain bassist Joe Copcutt, so we are expecting big things.

Bitter. Angry. Fake kicks off the E.P with a bang, from the off it’s clear to see where Zoax’s influences lie – in the realms of chaos. This is a hard hitting yet emotional song filled with powerful vocals and strong riffs, that provides a fantastically written introduction to XIII. The emotion continues to run through the E.P. with plenty of twists and turns to keep us interested. Burn It To The Ground is another well-composed song, and Zoax don’t seem to be holding back the punches. Jekyll Meets Hyde is a stand out track, with varied tempos and crescendos, before culminating in raw agonised screaming. Vocalist Adam Carroll‘s exasperated range compliments the track’s aggressive riffs perfectly.

It’s safe to say that Zoax make a strong first impression. Whether live or recorded, this is a band to keep an eye on. If this is just the beginning, we can’t wait to see where they go next. We can’t help but hope there is an album in their future, because Zoax are a band we can’t wait to hear more from. This is post-hardcore with an energetic bounce, the likes of which that many bands could go decades without nailing.
