Summary:

I love it, in a world full of despair and darkness, this reminds me that there are some things that are a little darker yet truly beautiful.

Courtesans kick off 2017 by unleashing their original brand of Doom/Pop upon us with new EP ‘Better Safe Than Sober’.  Courtesans are one of my favourite bands out there currently, it’s been great watching them grow over the last few years, having seen them put on jaw-dropping live performances at small dingy venues; and then being able to transfer that raw energy and passion when I saw them opening for Delain.  With a great string of UK dates and festivals lined up, I can’t wait to see what this year brings for them.

Starting off with a beautifully dark kick to the teeth ‘Knowhere’; live this has been one of my favourite tracks and I’m really pleased with how it translates from the studio, with a filthy riff and a feeling of utter decadence, this is the perfect welcome into the world of Courtesans.  ‘Feel The Same’ is a step in a new direction and a taste of something a different that Courtesans can offer.  Vocalist Sinead La Bella also uses rap/spoken word as well as her hauntingly brilliant clean vocals. It really works and shows what diversity they are capable of, whilst still having their underlying dark and seductive heart beating through.

John Doe and Mesmerise are tracks I am familiar with live, and like ‘Knowhere’ they translate beautifully across to recording, losing none of that raw edge.  Mesmerise has been one of my tracks I have always loved live; there is something very emotional and powerful behind it. Having recently launched their music video for Mesmerise it perfectly complements the feel of the song. If you haven’t heard of Courtesans yet I suggest checking out this video to get an introduction to their dark and seductive world.

Finishing off with ‘The Tide’ which is my favourite track on the EP; its a perfect mix of all I have grown to love about Courtesans over the last few years, and the new styles that have started to emerge on this EP.  Overall I love it, in a world full of despair and darkness, this reminds me that there are some things that are a little darker yet truly beautiful. Each piece of the musical puzzle the girls contribute vocally, musically and with the lyrics, submerges you into the ‘Better Safe Than Sober’ EP.  Keep an eye out for Courtesans and catch them on their current UK tour and festivals.
