Manchester based 67 Kung-Fu Eskimos’ latest EP  Return of the Magnificent 67 …. Back From Hells Igloo is the follow up to their debut EP Suitable for Microwaves which was released over twenty years ago, you can read about why it’s taken them so long to record their second offering here.

The opening track Passing of Time consists of the tick-tock, ticking of a clock and I counted twenty tick-tocks so this possibly represents the years the band these Eskimos lay frozen in their igloo in the deep dark depths of South East Manchester! From the tick tocking we go straight into some radio interference, religious chanting and what sounded like Terry Christian (although it may well have been lead vocalist Paul Cash) telling us that ‘When one person suffers from a delusion it’s classed as insanity, when thousands suffer from delusions it’s called Religion‘ leading into No Salvation with a country vibe. Then Now’s The Time time to read Fifty Shades of Grey? With a chugging beat, some Hawaiian style riffs and including the lyrics ‘Tie me up and force me, it’s time for me to kneel, if you beg I’ll let you hurt me’ before ending with the line ‘I’m your wicked bondage mule’ and donkeys lead us into monkeys with the mellower Mad Crazy Ape which, had me thinking of Big Audio Dynamite and would make nice relaxing lounge music, unless you start to ponder on the lyrics, because you whoever wrote them is frankly a bit insane and getting madder by the minute hence Victor!!!! A song about Victor or was it Victor – argh or Victor/Victoria? which reminded me musically of the Anti-Nowhere League until half way through it suddenly slows down and the narrated lyrics tell us that in ‘room 1205 she said she was alive but she was dead, Victor!!!!’ Who is Victor? I dread to think because it would give me nightmares.  He wears a dress and kinky underwear! I can only think of one Victor and I won’t think of Victor Meldrew in the same light again! To quote said Victor all I can say is I don’t believe it!

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
