Decade – Good Luck

Those cheeky lads from Bath band Decade,  have only got themselves nominated for best newcomer by Kerrang, I decided to give their debut album, Good Luck a bit of a listen, well it would be rude not to.

Released on Spinefarm records/ universal music group Jan 2014, the album follows two E.Ps, ‘Lost at Sea’, released in 2009 and ‘Decade’, released 2012. The album cover itself is heaped in sarcasm with the imagery based on the myth broken mirrors bringing bad luck, this slightly cynical take on the world is mimicked throughout the lyrics of the album.

Opening with the title track ‘Good Luck’, this is a fine example of their brand of punchy punk rock, similar to New Found Glory but manages to veer away from the generic over production and predictable song content normally found with bands from this genre. Instead the band focus on their strength in creating tracks which are catchy fast paced songs about normal everyday occurrences. The next few tracks ‘Brainfreeze’, ‘Callous’ and ‘British Weather’ were already released by the band in 2013 and are the best tracks. Throwing in snippets of guitar riffs spliced with Alex Sears vocal it’s clear to see why this band are gaining notoriety and after five years it’s deserved.

‘Great British Weather’ has been added to my pre work Monday morning playlist as it brandishes the lyrics, “to be honest I can’t be bothered anymore and today you’re stressing me out”, just how I will be feeling that day.

By the time the track ‘Coffin’ kicks in you realise the album’s almost over, as most songs barely hit two and a half minutes and this particular track barely hit the two minute mark, no one can say this band are making their music overdrawn. The track features the lyric of my life, “am going back to bed”!

The pace is slowed down for tenth track ‘Fake Teeth’ and bounces off onto bonus tracks ‘Thursday’ and ‘Who Knew??’, followed by acoustic versions of ‘Brainfreeze’ and ‘British Weather’ on the deluxe edition. Overall ‘Good Luck’ is a cracking debut from an innovative British band taking a genre and making it their own with a deliciously melancholy take on the world.
