Autumn and winter are definitely seasons of great music events. Take the Solstafir tour, for example. These Icelandic guys did not miss the chance to visit Scotland as well, so a Glasgow gig was a must. It was announced, that they would come here together with Spanish conquistadors Obsidian Kingdom but for unknown reasons, they pulled out and the only warm up Solstafir had was a local indie rock band called Thrum.
People were arriving quite slowly but constantly and by the time the concert started it got really crowded. Thrum started at 8 pm, luckily not in front of half empty club. They are a Female fronted indie rock band that apparently are good old friends with Solstafir and that could be the reason why they were here this evening. Because of long evening and as Obsidian Kingdom was not going to play, both bands had more time for everything – sound check and sets. Thrum used this time wisely and prepared lyrical and friendly show of solid 45 minutes duration. That was quite unusual and not easy for those, who are not much into female fronted bands.
Solstafir showed up on the stage just few minutes after 9 pm with long intro, which led to the even longer post-metal/rock music set. Their set started with most familiar and popular track Köld and continued with Lágnætti from their new album “Otta”. Once settled, vocalist Aðalbjörn Tryggvason asked the audience: “How are you feeling tonight?” and immediately got the grumpy answer. “Shite? Well, then we’ll make you feel better!” and they confidently did that. The band seemed to be in a very good mood and created their trademark atmosphere in the totally packed
Audio club. Aðalbjörn was the really one amazing frontman and with the possibility to get a really intimate gig, he tried communicate and be as close to the audience, as he could, crowning their show with the walk on the bar with his military sailor hat on and saying “I love you, too!” to one of his fans. He also had fun while asking audience to pronounce “Black Sands” in Icelandic (their song “Svartir sandar”). The show lasted solid one and half an hour and guys seemed fully giving themselves to the fans. The fantastic atmosphere and energy was slightly disturbed by the constant sound/technical difficulties, as the sound guy probably got out of the bed with the wrong leg that morning…
Despite all the difficulties this gig faced , it was still very much enjoyable and very intimate show, where these four Icelandic guys gave all the energy they had and chatted with fans just right after the show. Glasgow was left hypnotized!
