Corrupt Moral Altar chats with Planetmosh to tell us about the band, what they have been up to, what you can expect from them when they play at Damantion, their album ‘Mechanical Tides‘, playing with Entombed A.D., future plans plus more!
Can you give the readers a quick introduction to the band.
We are corrupt moral altar from Liverpool. We play pissed off grind infused sludge. We are Adam, Chris, John and Tom.
How would you describe your sound.
That is a difficult question since we take influences from pretty much everywhere and have no real set path.
To me personally it feels like we are a punk band with metal and grind influences. Think Iron Monkey meets Napalm Death with a bit of added weirdness.
What has been the bands biggest achievement so far.
To be honest, we never really set out to achieve anything at the start. We formed as something to keep us busy on some downtime and somehow things started moving fast.
We are really happy with the way our album “Mechanical Tides” has been received and also now being label mates with Mayhem and Deathspell Omega is pretty fucking cool.
Your debut album ‘Mechanical Tides’ was released in summer, how easy was it recording the album? Do you have a favourite track?
We recorded it at vagrant recordings (our drummer Tom Dring’s studio) over the summer of 2013.
I wouldn’t say it was easy on us, as the song lyrics and meanings are quite intense and personal to us. which can be mentally quite draining when you invest so much of yourself into a song.
We tried to be in the right frame of mind recording our instruments and I seem to remember us drinking / drugging quite heavily and throwing guitars about during the tracking.
It was also a great experience having Jeff Walker down doing vocals on a couple of tracks.
My personal favourite is probably “Admit Defeat” which we co wrote with Mitch Harris. We recorded an instrumental completely live and sent him a MP3 so he could write lyrics and interpret the song in his own way It blew us away with what he did, and we feel it is quite a departure to have such a track on a extreme record.
How has the fan reaction been?
Very positive so far, and we have seen some great reviews for the album.
You guys have been touring Europe this month with SICK/TIRED and CMA, how has the tour been going?
Crazy drives, crazy people, broken down vans, lots of squats, no showers, not enough drugs, too many drugs, flea bites, crust punk dogs, depression, euphoria, sleeping in the van, 4000+ miles and then, Damnation festival.
I think that sums it up. Sick/tired were a great live band and we had a lot of fun with them. Rome and Bloodshed Festival have felt like the highlights so far. A low was when we were in the Alps with a broken heater, 6 of us in the back of the van huddling together under sleeping bags attempting to keep warm.
Light and shade is always the way. Rough with the smooth.
Are you looking forward to the remainder of the UK dates supporting Entombed AD mid November;)
Yes ! We can’t wait for these shows to happen. We are all big Entombed fans, so it is a honour to be sharing a stage with them.
We are also looking forward to checking out hang the bastard on the tour and SSS when they play the Manchester date.
What can the audience expect from you at the festival.
A savage depressing barrage of noise, fast and slow. We can’t wait to play as it is the last date of our current tour.
What are you looking forward to most at Damnation!
Apart from playing, I am really looking forward to seeing old friends, the Anaal Nathrakh guys and winding up Becky Laverty one of the organisers of Damnation.
Also can’t wait to watch Anaal Nathrakh and Bolt Thrower destroy the stage.
What is your opinion of the Damnation line-up.
It’s a really strong lineup this year, with a little bit of everything extreme.
Can you sum up Damnation in one sentence!
SMASH
How would you describe the metal music scene today. What has changed over the last few years?
I think there is a strong scene in the UK at the moment, a lot of really good productive bands have popped up in the last few years. Such as Iron Witch, Gets Worse, Famine, No Fucks Given, Let It Die I could go on and on…
There is also a lot more gigs going on and small DIY labels and promoters appearing everywhere. If only venues wouldn’t t stop shutting down.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
After the Entombed AD shows it looks likely we will be going back into studio to work on more material for the next album.
We will start putting plans together for touring in 2015 and hopefully we will get to go to a lot of places we haven’t already been.
Any message you wish to pass on to the PM readers?
If your coming to Damnation come find us all at the merch stand, let’s drink some beers and watch some good bands.
