London based Jupiter Way consisting of Kevin Thomas (guitar, vocals), Jullian Vuitton (lead guitar), James Collymore (keyboard), Alex Walls (bass) and Sebastien Solsona (drums) are, if nothing else, an interesting listen.
The band’s debut EP, Catch Fire, is available now and what you’ll get, above all else, is a sound that is as recognisable as it is difficult to pigeon hole. Yes there are shades of Jim Morrison coming through Kevin Thomas’ vocals, particularly during Iron Memory, the beautifully composed lynchpin of the work. Then again there are also smatterings of Talking Heads seeping out as well, so to say it is eclectic in its tenor would be something of an understatement.
What’s really interesting though is that despite there being clearly a lot of references being made to a lot of other sounds, this doesn’t make what’s been created as a whole any weaker or indeed unoriginal. Listen to Church Avenue, for instance, close your eyes at the beginning and drift along any number of quiet backwaters in Mid West America, just before arriving to one big party that’s in full swing by its climax.
Oh, then there is superb guitar work of Jullian Vuitton. Here is a man with a future if ever there was one, with his superb understanding of what big solos are meant for, yet with a subtle understatement that will be a certain catch in the live arena.
A little rough around the edges with regards to the production, nevertheless Catch Fire from Jupiter Way is a solid indicator of what is hopefully to come in future.
