Tony Wright, Terrorvision’s enigmatic frontman is back with his second solo album, strangely this time around it’s a self-titled effort, that honour normally reserved for the first solo release. Most people only know Terrorvision for that one song (tequila) but there is much more to the band, and indeed Tony.
His first solo release, ‘Thoughts N’ All’ didn’t sit too well with me, it was far too dark and personal from a man I expected to be singing about wild parties and stuff. However over time it did grow on me.
This new release sort of carries on from where the debut left off, hitting the final tracks the debut does seem to lift out of its gloominess and become easier to listen too. It is certainly less critical.
“Music Is The Food Of Love” is this album’s opener, it is an uplifting track, full of the charm and swagger Tony is great at.
As I listened and digested this new album, it occurred to me that Tony is still telling us his life woes, but in an altogether more complex and satisfying way, everything about this second album is better than the first, especially the song writing, and especially on the album’s standout track, ‘Spoons And Knives’, starting out acoustically with a mellow vibe before building to a massive wall of hard rock sound, and then a sublime drop back into mellow mode, it does make you want to play the song again, immediately, just to be sure you heard it correctly, a masterful piece of songwriting. There are some darker tracks on here that really should have been on ‘Thoughts N’ All’ yet they do not distract from the overall uplifting feeling this self-titled release has.
‘One Size Fits All’ is a positively happy track, proving that Tony can write about such things, however it does seem to have taken him some time :-), and ‘Life’s Too Short’ is a great reflective acoustic song.
This is a great album for fans old and new, and I’m hoping for more new with this hard hitting rock album that boasts a tremendous selection of brilliantly crafted songs from start to finish.
