From tragedy comes triumph! It has been almost a year since the sad loss of Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee announced that the band was over. Guitarist Phil Campbell, who had been in the band since 1984 has now put together the Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons band featuring his three sons Todd on guitar, Dane on drums and Tyla on bass guitar. The line up is completed by Neil Starr on lead vocals. 2016 has seen them tour heavily and they have found time in between dates to record a debut self titled 5 track EP available now via UDR Records.
The Wildhearts like commercially heavy in your face riffs of opener ‘Big Mouth’ burst out of the speakers along with driving rhythms and a lung busting lead vocal. The raucous lead guitar solo fires it up even more. ‘Spiders’ rolls along on a slow burning groove with wah-wah drenched guitar solos. The NWOBHM tinged riffs in ‘Take Aim’ lead to a headbanging Sabbath like breakdown midway making it my highlight of the EP.
‘No Turning Back’ is full throttle heavy metal dominated by a furious drum battery from Dane Campbell. This highly impressive release ends with the sedate acoustic balladry of ‘Life In Space’. Its jaunty melodies are complimented by a pleading lead vocal as the song ends with the repeated refrain of “Please take me home”.
