Summary:

'This Dark Rage' is a technically proficient release filled with virtuosity and stellar crafting. Xerosun are on the up; do not get left behind.

Up for review today I have Xerosun‘s new EP ‘This Dark Rage.‘ Xerosun are a five piece progressive melodic death band from Dublin via Wales and Poland.  On listening to ‘This Dark Rage’ I can see exactly why they are ones to watch out for and have recently earned their spot in the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses semi-final.

The title track kicks off with the impressive growls of vocalist Martyna Halas Yeates bellowing above a blissful onslaught of down-tuned guitar riffs in a perfectly brutal mix.  The song also showcases the other-side of the band; Martyna’s equally impressive clean vocals. This is a killer start to the EP that leaves me wanting to immerse myself further into the progressotechnical world of Xerosun.

‘Anatomy of a Lie’ is an instant favourite of mine. I love the contrasting intro and the crushing riff digs its claws into you. The jump between the heavier and more melodic parts of the song make for another strong and addictive track.  As the EP progresses the varied melting pot of influences and musical styles that go into Xerosun come together to make them a band that is pushing the boundaries of creativity.  I find myself really feeling like I am missing out having not had the chance to see them perform live; pulling off such a powerful and earth-moving sound in the studio, I look forward to seeing what they can deliver live!

There is something about the haunting clean vocals in ‘The Mother of Morality’ that resonates with me. Xerosun make perfect use of the contrasting styles in their arsenal and that is what allows ‘This Dark Rage’ to pack so much punch. Their ability to pull off the melodic and heavier styles to perfection makes them a force to be reckoned with. The EP closes with a welcome aural assault on ‘Repent, Rewind, Reset’ leaving me exhausted from the sheer power of the delivery.

‘This Dark Rage’ is a technically proficient release filled with virtuosity and stellar crafting. Xerosun are on the up; do not get left behind.

I wish them the best of luck in their Metal 2 The Masses Semi-Final on April 29th at Fibber Magees, Dublin.
