VNDTA – Interview

VNDTA have just dropped a new track, Martyr – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNvj2vInwxg , which is lifted from their forthcoming EP, Pale Glow, out 13th April. We talked to the band to discuss their background and more….

What is the full band line-up, who plays what?

Megan Targett – Vocals, Callan Hughes – Guitar, Willem Mason-Geraghty, Drums, Jay Bacon – Guitar, 19.

How and when did the band form? Tell us anything interesting about your hometown.

VNDTA has been a band for a few years now but we became more serious about 3 years ago. Megan and Willem were looking for a guitarist and met Callan at a local music venue when they went to see a friend’s band play. We got along straight away and then started looking for another guitarist to play lead. Megan knew Jay from childhood as they had shared the local scene, but he was never quote old enough to join before. However, it worked out perfectly that we were looking, and he was finally a big boy! We had all previously played in bands but had struggled finding people with the same goals, attitude and drive. This is when we decided to form the new VNDTA.

There’s nothing particularly interesting to say about our hometown. There’s a lot of sheep and cows and we usually scare the shit out of them as well as the locals whilst rehearsing and writing!

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

The past eighteen months has been a real test for us as a band and a group of friends. We have put a lot of trust into people who have not only let us down but taken us to hell and back too. It really taught us how to keep each other motivated, positive and become a family. We’re really protective of each other now and all the negative times has fuelled a lot of creativity.

Who are your musical influences?

We all have a huge variety of influences that doesn’t just include metal. So when it comes to writing we take inspiration from bands such as Queen, No Doubt, Prince and Johnny Cash, as well as taking inspiration from After the Burial, Thy Art is Murder, Periphery and Pantera.

Where did the name of band come from?

After seeing the word ‘Vendetta’ crop up in several places such as Slipknot’s ‘All Hope is Gone’ and the movie ‘V for Vendetta’, Meg looked up the word in the dictionary. At the same time she was struggling with depression and was in a difficult situation at home. Constantly being told that she would amount to nothing, the word ‘vendetta’ seemed to fit perfectly with the driving force behind the music.

Where have you played or toured? Please name all countries / regions and recognised bands that you have played with.

We have played all over the UK from Plymouth to Manchester and everywhere in-between. This year we plan on going even further and hopefully venturing across Europe and beyond. We’ve played with some amazing bands and made a lot of friends along the way. The most memorable for us are Aghast, Vanity, King Leviathan and Confessions of a Traitor.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We feel as though we are different from other bands as we do not limit ourselves to one genre or style. When writing new material, whatever comes out and feels right, we run with it. I think people will be able to relate to us as we are very real and down to earth. There’s no ‘rock-star’ persona with us, what you see is what you get. Vulnerability, passion and true friendship is at the core of this band.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Our music is a release for any emotion that you cannot describe to any human being. It is venting, and it is healing. It is there for you in your darkest times and your greatest. It is whatever you want it or need it to be when nothing or nobody else can understand.
