The Exploding Boy – Alarms

The exploding boy are a Dark Indie band from Stockholm, Sweden. Alarms is their 5th studio album, but in the UK they’re still fairly unknown. Dark Indie – a strange genre description, and Indie is a fairly vague genre anyway which seems to be overrun with more oasis clones than original sounding bands. Happily The Exploding Boy have a distinct and original sound. It’s an interesting sound – kind of Indie rock meets 80s synth-pop with a bit of Sisters of Mercy thrown in, and of course a bit of The Cure (the band whose song gave The Exploding Boy their name).

I have to say I love this album – that blend of 80s synth-pop (the good stuff like OMD, New Order etc) with guitar driven indie-rock and the dark goth sound of Sisters of Mercy just works so well and it gives The Exploding Boy a sound that stands out from the crowd – you won’t find another band that sounds quite like this, and these days it’s rare to find a band that is so unique and at the same time good.

An excellent album – if you want to try something a bit different then this album is highly recommended.
