What is the full band line-up, who plays what?
Adam ‘Fonzy’ Armour: Vox, Guitar, Synth, percussion. Zack Reed: Vox, Synth.
Ellie ‘Jellie’ Daymond: Drums.
How and when did the band form? Tell us anything interesting about your hometown.
Fonzy: We only just decided to start this band in January 2016 as I had just finished with another band. Bristol is the place to be for music, nearly everyone’s a creative type so it’s competitive but alive. We noticed a huge lack in electronic music like Synthwave, Electronica, New wave etc so that was the first year and a half of Siblings being that genre. We just thought in our scene, nobodies really trying this, since then we have found a few.
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
Ellie came in this year (2018). Whist we loved what we were playing, coming from a punk, metal, alternative background we felt like something was missing. It was when we started writing ‘Gargantua’ our real influences started coming out and Ellie really changed our perspective on our sound.
Who are your musical influences?
We started originally taking influence from Tame Impala, Foster the People, Empire of the Sun so quite mainstream. We now take huge influence from Pixies, The Mars Volta, Alexisonfire, Billy Talent, Old school Muse and combining dark synth, retro synth sounds and pop with that for a unique sound.
How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? Are you friends from school or any family relations?
Fonzy: Myself and Zack met over 11 years ago now while I was in a blind date and she
brought Zack along as ‘security’. I never saw the girl after but me and Zack remained friends. We formed a punk ska band years back but it went nowhere. I actually found Ellie’s session drummer website online and begged her to join us. She was having none of it as what we were playing just really wasn’t her thing. I told her about the changes we wanted to make and she rose to the occasion immediately.
In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?
We have been played on multiple radio stations internationally and in the U.K as well as been added to a few Spotify playlists, oh and Dan Aykroyd likes us apparently, that’s pretty sick. We have spent a lot of time with bands and we are always making ways to stand out from the endless line of similar genre acts. Without naming names we have despised
certain ways bands advertise themselves thanks to mummy and daddies money or even making kids pay for their career because they just love them so much without giving anything back. We work hard as a band and I think it shows, we have never asked for anything to fund us and everything has been done D.I.Y. there aren’t enough acts doing that nowadays. Combining 80s synth with 90s alt rock, to modern day metal is just something that’s rarely done and we believe this sound is authentic and as unique as it gets. Even when naming songs, if somebody has already done it we will name it something else. We also do comedy shorts to promote concerts and releases which is a fun way of reaching new people as it shows another side.
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
First of all sucks you’re deaf dude that must blow so hard. If you were to watch an explosion or something very creepy and disturbing, our sound is the edit that makes that fear something beautiful. When a moment is calm we make it relentless and loud, when things are chaotic and uncomfortable we bring it to a place of paradise. We show you a side of what you first perceived as a terrible thing is actually something gorgeous when you look at it again.
Do you have a tour on the horizon?
We do, we will be playing ‘Gargantua’ in full along with a few of our Synthwave influences back catalogue. From September we have 20 different dates supporting some amazing some amazing bands such as Reventure and Tokyo Taboo as well as headlining most venues. Cities included Brighton, London, Leeds, Sheffield, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Plymouth, Norwich, High Wycombe, Bristol, Newport, Bridgewater, Swindon and Whitchurch. We will be working with some of the U.Ks biggest Synthwave promoters as well.
