Tomorrow is the day that Brit rockers SONDER drop their mesmerising new single, A Wicked Place. This firecracker of a track pulls from everyone from Nirvana and Biffy Clyro, to Arcane Roots and Basement. We had the guys in for a chat…..
What is the full band line-up, who plays what?
Kraig Fallows – Guitar & Vocals, Andrew Monckton – Guitar, Luke Watson – Bass,
Reece Mason – Drums.
How and when did the band form? hometown.
Sonder formed in late 2016 in a small market town called Tamworth. It all came around from the demise of previous projects we’d all been involved in within the local music scene and never had much success from. We all took a break after these broke down and then, after having a drunken catch up decided to form a band.
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
When Sonder first formed, we were actually started as a three piece, with Kraig playing guitar & bass simultaneously (through a whole mess of pedals and tap dancing), and whilst this worked in terms of getting us up and running, it never really helped us gel as a band due to having to concentrate so much on how to write certain riffs that everything lacked the cohesion and focus needed.
That was when Reece luckily bumped into Luke (again, in a pub on a drunken night out) who as it happened had just left his previous band. Reece mentioned we were after a full time bassist and Luke came to our next practice.
As soon as Luke joined, the quality of the writing and paying in the band increased massively. We spent months locked in our practice space to make sure we were as tight as we could possibly be. The best compliment we then got after our first ever show was to be told that we sounded like a band that had been playing together for years.
Who are your musical influences?
Our musical influences individually are quite varied, but we have certain influences that as a band have helped form the sound we have. Nirvana is probably the biggest influence on all of us as they’re one of the biggest reasons any of us play music, let alone influence the songs we write.
On top of Nirvana, we’re influenced by bands like Biffy Clyro, Basement, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Arcane Roots & Black Foxxes. All these bands have big hooks in their tracks and have a penchant for big guitars and catchy choruses which is something we’ve always focused on.
Where have you played or toured? Please name all countries / regions and recognised bands that you have played with.
We’ve kept our shows to the UK but have been lucky enough to play with some really great bands in the last 12 months. We’ve had support slots with Fizzy Blood, Fangclub, The Fallen State & Sick Joy to name just a few. Our next show is supporting Pagan & Phoxjaw. It’s been brilliant to get the chance to play with so many great bands!
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
Massive guitars, pop hooks and sing along choruses!
Do you have a tour on the horizon?
We’re planning on heading on tour in 2019, either supporting or doing a small headline run.
