Hailing from Germany and formed 2008, they present their 5th album. Downfall of Gaia are a melting pot of influences, taking pieces from many different genres and making them blend into a seamless onslaught which is full of unexpected twists and turns.
There are several long pieces on this album which require a bit of patience and focus to fully take on board everything that is being fired from their arsenal. It has been quite a struggle to digest this record, as at first it appears it is trying to be all things to all people.
“We Pursue the Serpent of Time” is the gateway to success with this album. The intro of drums signals a journey into the dark, before launching an all out black metal attack. The band is hellish tight and the intricate riffs can be perfectly heard through the speed which are topped of with demented vocals.
This is when the surprises start to jump out, a middle section which is perfectly formed post rock before going back into the seething black metal. The ending which is a mix again of post rock with a mournful piano riff is the icing on the cake.
The female voices introduced in places are points of familiarity and welcome respite to the main vocals. The guitarists are beyond handy and can weave together some massive melodies and impressive riffs among the chaos.
The band has surpassed all expectations on this record which has set them onto another level. The production is fierce but is pitched at a level which blends the different elements together forming a cohesive finished record .
The band have come quite a way from even their last record, whilst this will not jump out of the speakers and give you an instant hit, it is well worth the effort dedicating a little time and energy to get the best from this one.
