Tonight’s venue is Chester’s live rooms, which claims to be one of the north wests premier live venues. I’m afraid I have to take that claim with a huge pinch of salt. The sound is atrocious, barely able to hear the vocals in all the bands this evening and the lighting, well what’s left of it is very poor. Anyway enough of the venue and on to tonight’s entertainment…
Vetala hail from Chester and kicked off in a glorious fashion. They remind me of type o negative in many ways. And that’s a good thing. Vocally it’s a heavier sound than type o, but these guys are definitely going in the right direction and kudos must be given for the drummer carrying on even when his snare drum split during the last song.
Desert Storm were next and again vocals were low in the mix. Musically I guess there was a Kyuss vibe going on, and who doesn’t like a bit of Kyuss. I really wish I could of heard more of the vocals as I could give you a more in depth opinion but alas it wasn’t to be.
And so on to tonight’s headliners the mighty Raging Speedhorn. The Corby bruisers are a force to be reckoned with under normal circumstances but tonight the venue and the lack of punters seems to have possibly put a shadow over proceedings. Frank is a formidable vocalist and even though he seems a little inebriated tonight, his vocals are spot on. New co conspirator Dan Cook is an intense figure as he stalks the stage even venturing into the empty crowd. I have to be honest though, I miss John but thats irrelevant really. That was then this is now.
I would of liked a few more songs from the first album if I’m honest as they were the ones that made me fall in love with the HORN but I guess you need to cover all bases. And they did play a few new songs which i certainly hope get them the attention they deserve.
My heart goes out to bands that go out and play when only a few diehards have taken the time to show up. It must be hard. Raging Speedhorn played a great gig if truth be known, it’s just no one made the effort to show up and support live music. When bands like these no longer manage to pull a decent crowd you know that the uk music scene is in a desperate state of affairs. If we don’t support live music we will lose it and we’ll all have to listen to what the radio tells us to. And that my friend is when music dies.
