3teeth and PIG live at the Key Club in Leeds on 04.02.2020

The Key Club is a long-standing Leeds venue that is basically a large dark dingy cellar.  The large crowd tonight looks like a sea of black, packed with an army of industrial metallers and goths.  The audience has arrived early and the atmosphere is set for the 3teeth tour support, the cult underground band PIG.

PIG

The smoke and lights make for a great backdrop to the flamboyant stage presence of bandleader Raymond Watts.  He looks like a gothic industrial Scott Weiland, posing and preening in his feather collar and cuffs.  The Revelation makes for a lively opener, it has crunching guitars and is a perfect introduction to the band.   It is the first of many tracks tonight from both PIG and 3teeth that will feature both political and religious undertones.

Formed in the late 80s, Watts own brand of dance electronica see PIG continue the vibe with “mob, mob” Mobocracy, a real lively stomper that is reminiscent of The Newlydeads.  All hail PIG as they follow with the truly amazing The Chosen Few, with repeated lines like “apocalypse for one and all” and “don’t want heaven crammed with the likes of you”.  It continues with the religious themes and sounds like NIN at their very best.  This is also the moment that PIG starts to come alive and show some real individuality.

Hot Hole has manic drumming that creates a chaotic sound that compliments an almost funky beat in the background.  Find it, Forget it, is a fun musical snippet that entertains the crowd and Painiac is authentic danceable 90’s industrial.

The big crowd-pleaser is Juke Joint Jezebel from Raymond’s old band KMFDM.  Singing “Be mine, sister salvation” this one gets the crowd singing and dancing along in unison.

After many audience squeals,  Prey and Obey delivered with its “bullshit, bile and bigotry” lyrics and handclaps from their guitarist, to rouse the audience.  The finale of this diverse and spectacular night was  Prime Evil which reminded me of Killing Joke. PIG certainly brought the bacon delivering an entertaining and enthusiastic set.

It is plain to see that the vast majority of the crowd are here to see 3teeth.  The Los Angeles band have recorded three albums and supported the likes of Tool and Rammstein.

3teeth

Los Angeles American Industrial metal goths 3teeth take to the stage and look every bit like a headlining act.  Alexis Mincolla, the vocalist appears like an industrial Dog the Bounty Hunter wearing a leather-like butchers apron-vest giving him as esthetic look. The red lights are the only lights on the dark stage which add to the flavour of the set.

After the brief intro of Hyperstition we get attacked by Affluenza. It sounds like The Prodigy and has a rave element to the music.  Exxxit sounds like a chugging NIN, American Landfill sounds like Mechanical Animals era Marilyn Manson and Time Slave is 90’s nu-metal with a melodic chorus.

Altaer is obviously a big fan favourite. It has a slow verse and the audience enjoy raising their arms to the “you will” chorus.  With Shutdown, a gritty grimy number that is reminiscent of later Korn, the crowd become more alive with pockets of people dancing throughout the room.  Sell Your Face has a basic danceable grove similar to White Zombie.  Degrade builds up nicely to the very popular Slavegod.  With cheers from the crowd, suddenly heads are being banged as they enjoy the wild screams and heavy noise.  The crowd continues in full flow during the Max Cavalera influenced Chasm with its very organic feel.

Insubstantia with its goth synths leads onto Pit of Fire. With the heavy intensity of its grinding riff, it is like smash-your-face-goth, with everyone from the front to the back having a good time.  3teeth end their main set with melodic Atrophy, sample-heavy instrumental Tabula Umbra and Master of Decay, a blistering heavy track with a great danceable beat.

Alexis dons an alien lizard mask for the encore President X.  With a stomping groove and a marching beat, it gets the whole crowd dancing and everyone leaves smiling.
