Summary:

Not as heavy as the albums we usually review on Planetmosh, but still a great listen and one that's bound to interest fans of Ocean Colour Scene

Andy Bennett is best known as a member of Ocean Colour Scheme, in which he played guitar for over a decade before leaving the band last year to focus on his own solo projects.  He’s just released his solo album, Thinkin’ Drinkin’ Singin’ via Swan Music.

In terms of the recording the album is split into two by how the songs were recorded.  For half of them they were basically recorded live with his band, while the other half are done differently with Andy Bennett playing all the instruments apart from piano and strings. The album kicks off with “Hole in the road” which was the first single to be released.  It’s a great song that you can imagine being a big hit if sung by a better known artist – let’s hope it brings Andy Bennett plenty of success.  Check out the video below…

Obviously Ocean Colour Scenes fans will be drawn to “Old pair of jeans”, a song he wrote for Ocean Colour Scheme and which he performs on this album, and which sounds excellent although not too different to the original version.

The second single on the album is “Drift away” which has a cheerful carefree feel to it, and also has a bit of a Beatles influence to it.

“Fool no more” is a nice rocky track and is one of the more lively songs on the album as well as being one of my favourites.

This is an album that isn’t anywhere near as heavy as much of the stuff covered on Planetmosh, but as much as I love metal, sometimes you need something lighter and this does the job nicely.  It’s somewhere in the rock-pop spectrum with a load of songs that you can easily imagine getting plenty of radio airplay (they certainly deserve that). A very good album and one that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening to while writing this review.
