Summary:

Anywhere But Here? I can think of far worse places to be than listening to a bit more of what Black Aces have to offer. Great riffs, a powerhouse rhythm section teamed with high pitched vocals from front-man Tyler Kinder make for another fine example of balls to the wall Australian hard rock. If you like the music of bands like AC/DC, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo and The Deep End then you are sure to enjoy this album too.

Black Aces a young hard rocking four piece from sunny Australia release their second album Anywhere But Here via Off Yer Rocka Recordings today followed by an appearance on the main stage at Hard Rock Hell XI tomorrow. Anywhere But Here is the follow up to their debut album Shot In The Dark which was released towards the end of last year and reviewed for PlanetMosh here. The new album was recorded at Melbourne’s Thirty Mill studios in just one week and co-produced by Mark Opitz and Colin Wynne with work commencing on their second album whilst they were still touring and promoting Shot In The Dark.

Black Aces are definitely consistent, another album which is clearly influenced by AC/DC but that doesn’t detract from the quality. Great riffs, a powerhouse rhythm section teamed with high pitched vocals from front-man Tyler Kinder make for another fine example of balls to the wall Australian hard rock. Although I picked up a lot of AC/DC similarities I also picked up some other mighty fine comparisons. Opening track Show You How to Rock n Roll starts a bit Iron Maiden before running into AC/DC I’m thinking Run To The Hills meets For Those About To Rock (We Salute You). Anywhere But Here an anthemic sing along track with a driving beat. Where You Love From has the same sultry quality as AC/DC’s Let Me Put My Love Into You

Good Woman (Gone Bad) reminded me of The Deep End‘s Bigger. Better. Badder. Rhythm guitarist Jarrad Morrice is a former member of The Deep End, so that’s no great surprise and if you look closely you may see a younger Jarrad in the video to that track here.. In Short Changed I picked up a similarity to Sick As A Dog a track from their debut album Shot In The Dark and also to Hair Of The Dog originally by Nazareth and covered by Guns N’ Roses with a bit of Aerosmith’s Same Old Song and Dance thrown in for good measure, so I didn’t feel too short changed! Then last but not least we come to We Came For Rock n Roll which reminded me of AC/DC’s Rock Or Bust.

Anywhere But Here? I can think of far worse places to be than listening to a bit more of what Black Aces have to offer. If you like the music of bands like AC/DC, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo and The Deep End then you are sure to enjoy this album too. If you’re at Hard Rock Hell XI this week then you can see Black Aces on the main stage on Thursday (9th November).

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
