Summary:

I kind of get the feeling that Black Star Riders are only just on the edge of a new era and are going to get better and better as fans start to leave behind what was without doubt an amazing Thin Lizzy, and pledge their support to the progress of the band going forward into 2014 with this new format.

After interviewing bassist Marco Mendoza for Planetmosh, I made my way round to the venue full of entrepidation of Thursday nights event to come! Joining the gathering and growing crowd we watched the two supporting bands ( Western Sand and The Dead Daisies ) doing an amazing job of warming up the stage for the guy’s of BSR.

After the first two bands had finished, we all waited patiently while the roadies went into overdrive re-setting the stage. There was an elevating buzz of excitement among the fans as it got closer to show time with a good mixture of older first generation Thin Lizzy fans who had come to see and hear this metempsychosis of the old band, and a new generation of young BSR fans who had most likely been drip-fed Thin Lizzy songs by their fathers since birth. All the same, the stage was now set and with the lights starting to go down, over the speakers came what sounded like the rumble of theme music from an old western film. The guy’s then came onto the stage to a raucous reception which nearly drowned out Ricky’s opening speech!

Straight into the opening track ‘All Hell Breaks Loose ‘, then followed a series of new Black Star Riders songs from the first new album released this year, and complimented and intermingled by some classic Thin Lizzy tracks. It was a really well balanced set of old and new songs that seemed to please everyone, and to be honest the new songs are so well written and composed they feel like instant classics already. With the likes of ‘Before the War, Kingdom of the Lost, Hey Judas, Bound for Glory and Valley of the Stones‘, I kind of get the feeling that Black Star Riders are only just on the edge of a new era and are going to get better and better as fans start to leave behind what was without doubt an amazing Thin Lizzy, and pledge their support to the progress of the band going forward into 2014 with this new format.

The guy’s put on a real show to be proud of and looked and sounded as fresh as the first gig of the tour earlier this year. With Marco bouncing about and spinning like a top with his base guitar, to watching  Jimmy DeGrasso on drums smiling through out the set. Scott Gorham obviously loving every minute, while Damon Johnson treated us to some awesome fretwork. Leaving only Ricky Warwick who sang his heart out while he played guitar and at one stage played the harmonica.

I,m just really pleased to have been privileged enough to see them in their first year as a new band, and I for one am already a follower of Black Star Riders and can’t wait for the next installment!  Roll on 2014!!!
