Bleed From Within, Silent Scream, Heart of A Coward and Empires Fade, Manchester Academy 3 review 24.04.13

EmpiresFade-2181

Tonight is about hostility, invasion and violation. The Academy 3 is a great venue to hold such a gig, intimate for circle pits and a PA that can actively hold and handle a sound of deathcore metal.

Manchester based Empire’s Fade step up to open for one of the most brutal up and coming bands. They had everything hardcore band could hope for crushing blast beats, a ferocious rhythm and what I really liked about them and what stood out was a melodic and progressive guitar parts from guitarist Mike Bennett, it really took the edge off after so much aggression. It gave their music a different angle and more depth.

Silent Screams are up next. There is a lot going about these guys and I am looking forward to their set. To name a few Silent Screams have toured with  Bring Me The Horizon, Your Demise and For The Fallen Dreams. Just by mentioning these you can guess the successful profile of the band. ‘Assume The worst’ began leading nicely through to ‘Desperation’ and ‘The Way we are’. ‘The Way We Are’  demonstrated immense capability from bass player and melodic vocalist  ‘Tom Craig’. The commanding rhythm section mixed with the melodic progressive section was well executed. To finish came ‘When It Rains’.

Now Heart of a Coward I thought were a talented band. What an absolute intense set. Vocalist Jamie Graham takes full domination  with cutting deep growls and slicing melodic vocals. ‘Nightmare’ was the opener and set the mark of a smashing performance. Tonight was about sharing their debut album ‘Hope and Hindrance’ with an demonic feel from ‘Killing Fields’. Drummer Christopher “Noddy” Mansbridge possess a demolishing speed of technicality that is fascinating to watch. They finish their night with ‘Around a Girl in 80 Days’.

I think the overall line up was too much of the same genre. It started to get boring hearing the same stuff over and over again, there was very limited characteristic’s between them so after three bands your expecting or in fact needing a lot from the headliner. Although I will say for deathcore in a strange way it is very charismatic feel to it.

BleedFromWithin-2833

Bleed From Within enter the stage with what could only be a intro leading into their single from their newly released album ‘Uprising’. The crowd went barbaric, even though the venue wasn’t full, which wasn’t expected, the fans had a lot of room for a raging circle pit.  There is something different about Bleed From Within and couldn’t quite put my finger on it, could it be the maniacal percussive explosions from the drummer Ali Richardson  or their chugging rhythmically oriented riffs from guitarists Craig ‘Goonzi’ Gowans and
Martyn Evans.  Bleed From within are extremely clever and dynamical incorporating bass drops and breakdowns to wind up the audience more. These fans were definitely die hards, the album being only out for a few weeks and lyrics were known well. The set came to close with ‘Colony’ and ‘It Lives in Me’ with an encore ‘Servants of Divinity’ Bow to your fucking god! Bow down to Bleed From Within for a cracking performance.

About Del Preston

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweet shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me and Keith Moon and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweet shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shop owner and his son, that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business really. But sure enough, I got the M&Ms and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.
