After three self-financed and self-released albums to date, Welsh hardcore crew BWP signed to Siege Of Amida Records / Century Media at the tail end of last year, and this offering – also their first with vocalist Louis Gauthier and drummer Craig Reynolds, who joined the band at the start of the touring cycle for their last opus, the highly impressive ‘Scatter The Ashes’ – is ther first fruit of this new chapter in the five piece’s evolution.
‘Suspension…’ is both a consolidation and a logical progression of the band’s sound – a sound which has most definitely helped to establish them as one of the leading lights of the UK hardcore scene. It sees the band continuing more and more down the melodic route, developing an approach that is harder, punchier yet at the same time progressive and more hook-laden than the initially more grindcore sound that characterized their first couple of releases.
Gauthier is a convincing frontman, displaying on disc the passion and commitment of both his and the band’s live shows, while the breadth and depth of the material is brought out by both the quality of the individual musicianship, combined with their ever maturing songwriting ability, and the superb production (the latter abetted by the mixing of Converge’s Kurt Ballou, which draws out the deep, inner darkness of much of the background material and combines it beautifully with the hard-edged punkiness of the main riffs) and the thoughtful songwriting.
The result is a hard-hitting but satisfyingly complex opus which will surely rank as one of the best hardcore albums of the year.
